Ah, I see. It seems that maybe only BartC is in favour of this
version.
I don't mind repetition per se (sometimes you just have to write several
getchar calls), it's the fact that the two getchar calls are logically
the same that bugs me. You need to write two just to get the same
execution ordering that you get from one in the simpler version. So,
for me, it's not just (as Eric pointed out) that changes to them must be
synchronised, it's the irritation of them being, essentially, the same
but written separately.
C's IO is designed round this "try it first" style. The getchar example
is a simple one, but you might have a much more complex IO operation:
while ((n = fread(data, sizeof *data, N_ITEMS, fp)) > 0) {
// use data[0] ... data[n-1]
}
Would you duplicate that here or switch to the while (1) ... break pattern?
Finally, there are complex cases where you often have no assignment
except as a side effect of a function call. I presume that's OK, and
you would not duplicate the scanf here:
while (scanf("%d: %d %10s", &lno, &n, word) == 4) {
// ...
}
So maybe I can tempt you with
char c;
while (scanf("%c", &c) == 1 && c != '\n') {
// ...
}
Is that better?
