<https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Incremental_Backup> describes them as "COW" snapshots. I assume that "COW" stands for "copy on write" - which means the snapshot is only some kind of alias for the original file. Actual file copying only takes place when either the original or one of the aliases gets written to - and that copying does in fact involve reading the original file before writing the copy.

The data might not pass through the main cpu, but something still reads the original file before writing the copy - otherwise, how would it know what to write to the copy?
