RDP to PC. > Prophet, ProCad+, Datapower, OvationPro, Artworks2 and Photodesk just > to name a few. Here, everything still works! Until very recently the one and only machine and still my main (mostly used) machine.. ..first powered up 05 Dec 94 ..and used or at least switched on, on average, 10/12 hours or more every day ..some days even roll into blocks of the things. What still works with this Risc PC RISC OS 4.02 in the 'modern' era: pretty well everything, if sometimes slowly compared to the latest, depending on the application. What works at 'normal' (expected) 'speed' regardless of Risc PC or the latest 'whizz-bang'?.. HP Colour LaserJet direct connection with network router, giga HDDs 1+1 backup, USBs, (perhaps Jason could make it easier to add items to the USB list); ..and still capturing stills and playing video a la Messrs Golightlys' card(!); ..and erm.. offhand, lots and lots of the usual things! ..except for some/most flash graphics, some/on line modern video content and, of course, those home sites that persist in using variants of Microsoft's 'javascript' to confuse each other. The last possibly becoming ever less relevant for increasing numbers of aware commercial players. (So not necessarily a great loss, these days depending on the viability of a site).. What's been very recently added here as 'new stock'.. An HP Netbook - without Microsoft - but running the KDE package of Linux Ubuntu: Upside (and neat): Loads in and sets itself up (with even less on-screen auto-scripting than a Risc PC) to look exactly like ..erm.. a Risc PC! ..even has an icon bar.. with proggies sitting on it - and 'Calligra Sheets' - similar in many ways to Schema2.. (Most files transfer as CSVs).. Runs the latest (secure) Firefox like a dream; has a competent RW/R/CD et al attached player/recorder ..and yet still, for most purposes, the Risc PC is the more useable and 'smoother' machine, particularly Risc PC's onscreen windows which are such an intuitive delight to use. (Linux is getting there, perhaps).. ..and yes.. I know, Brian ..Raspberry is such a sweet individual Pi from 'Mr. Kipling'! :)) (Next stop) ..dunno.. extend the Risc PC base in case of collapse; investigate a Microsoft version of a Netbook capable of running RISCOS (VRPC) or whatever.. Incidentally, have read some comment around here about the obtuse textual inputs of Linux. I guess not really so - lots of help to initially set up in moments - after that, graphical User Interface takes over automatically whenever netbook is switched on - (and can be as per Risc PC ..as stated above).. The Linux proggie base, (continually checked worldwide in case of hacking, virus etc) is, I gather, is identical for most Linux machines - a particular distribution being more the manner in which that distro appears 'on screen'. Most proggies should work no matter the distro ..even Fedora's Raspberry Pi edition.. Virus' et al under Linux ..as RiscPC, nil that reaches me, The User - secure Security and Software updates every few days as the (10,000+ team and more), come across anomolies, develop progs etc. So, suitable for chained Nerds and domesticed Users alike.. A Future desire! A VRPC package of some sort that runs inside one the Linux distros - if not all of them as above.. Be less of a chance of one the 100,000s of Microsoft nasties that no-one seems able to control, without vast expense to the consumer and even vaster profits to Microsoft for the backup of the KGB et al... :)) I've rambled rather a lot ..apologies.. ;)) Bill ZFC -- Adoption InterLink UK with -=- http://www.billsimpson.com/ Domain Host Orpheus Internet -=- http://www.orpheusinternet.co.uk/
