It may be your card reader.
I've got one that I used to use which worked up to 4 Gb but when I
bought a 16 Gb card it behaved as you describe

I've now bought a new card reader from Gizoo ( www.gizoo.co.uk ) £2.95
which handles up to 16 Gb with no problem.
