The benefit of this particular piece of code is that it was *not*
written by the author of a particular compiler. Howerd made a common
assumption that spot use of assembler would improve performance.
In this case spot use does not improve performance over a range of
Forth compilers.

Anyone who disassembles compiler output and is a comptent assembler
programmer should be able to write code that is at least as fast
as the compiler output. This not the point.

What these numbers are indicating is that you have to write more
assembler than you might want in order to beat good code
generators.
