Druck is right:  it was happening too early in boot for Reporter to 
pick it up.  Maybe I need to twiddle my Reporter configuration.

Meanwhile, I recalled that I had this same bizarre error a couple of 
years ago and did a Google search.  Lo, a thread on c.s.a.misc in 
2010.  The obscure problem arose because I had done   *unplug CDFS   
and    *unplug cdfsfiler   -- because I use CDROMFS and thought I 
would tidy things up by getting rid of these other modules.  And I 
seem to have got into the same tidying-up mode again.
   The modules live on the RiscOS 4.39 rom.  However, the 
unpluggedness causes an OLDER version of these modules to load from 
Unipod or somewhere.
   The solution was to un-unplug these modules.  And what is the 
command for that?  Does   *help unplug   tell us how to un-unplug?  
No, it does not.  But Martin Wuerthner did:  the command is   
*RMinsert CDFS   and   *RMinsert cdfsfiler  (and I have begun a file 
within the Manuals directory for stuff that should be in helpfiles).

Problem solved.  No more "Error from ¬".  Will file this one alongside 
the infamous "ofla ofla".
