Das war aber nicht die Frage - das image sollte doch nur eine Partition
enthalten.

Und es ist auch garnicht nötig, das kann inzwischen "losetup" selber:
-P, --partscan
Force the kernel to scan the partition table on a newly created
loop device.
Zusammen mit
-f, --find
Find the first unused loop device. If a file argument is
present, use the found device as loop device. Otherwise, just
print its name.
reicht damit "losetup -fP <image>", um für ein _komplettes_ Platten-image
loop-devices für alle Partitionen (/dev/loop<n>p<i>) zu erstellen.
BTW könnte die _erste_ der angeführten Fehlermeldungen ("Failed to read
last sector (76083776):") durchaus darauf hindeuten, daß hier doch
versehentlich ein Platten- statt eines Partitions-image im Spiel ist.
Das ließe sich ggfs. mit "file <image>" feststellen.
