That still sounds like "don't do that."  If the library might
be multithreaded, the calling program needs to deal with that.
A broken program that sometimes works due to luck is still broken.

This all seems pretty hypothetical, though.  Yes, there are plenty
of packages that can be compiled with different flavors of dbm but
I don't ever recall seeing one that then exported a library to
be used by other applications.  I mostly work on FreeBSD so I
could believe that linux packages are sloppier.
