Scientific, medical, and sleep experts, including those from the
American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and experts often cited in
conjunction with research in fields related to Mayo Clinic, argue that
permanent Daylight Saving Time (DST) is not ideal for health.
While the twice-yearly switch is considered the most disruptive, experts
favor permanent standard time as the healthiest option because it better
aligns with the human circadian rhythm.
Here is the breakdown of why permanent DST is considered unhealthy based
on expert consensus:
Why Permanent DST is Considered Unhealthy:

Circadian Mismatch ("Social Jetlag"): Our internal biological
clocks are set by sun exposure, not by the clock on the wall. Permanent
DST creates a permanent, one-hour gap between our internal body clock
and social clocks (school/work) during winter months, leading to chronic
sleep deprivation.
Darker Mornings, Lighter Evenings: DST shifts an hour of daylight
from the morning to the evening. Experts say morning light is critical
for waking up and regulating the body, while dark, cold mornings in
winter are detrimental to waking up, especially for teenagers and, if
not managed, children traveling to school.
Health Risks: Chronic disruption to the body clock from being on
the "wrong" time is associated with higher risks of serious health
issues, including obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and
cardiovascular issues.
Mental Health Impact: Permanent DST in winter can increase the
prevalence and severity of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) due to
darker mornings.

Mayo Clinic Specific Findings:

A recent Mayo Clinic study (2024) found that while the switch to
DST in the spring causes a slight, short-term increase in cardiovascular
events (heart attacks/strokes) on the following Monday and Friday, the
overall impact of the transition over the week was not clinically
significant.
However, Mayo Clinic specialists emphasize that consistent sleep
schedules are vital, and the abrupt, twice-yearly time changes are
generally disruptive to health, causing "social jetlag".
Other experts, rather than Mayo itself, have argued in journals
that permanent DST is worse than the current system, making the debate
centered on switching to permanent Standard Time instead.

Conclusion:
While having long, bright summer evenings is popular, health experts
argue that from a biological perspective, permanent DST forces us to
live against our natural clocks, leading to worse sleep and higher
long-term health risks.

OOPS, sorry Doctor!!!!
