I only use the SIM for contacts (as I've done since my first phone in
1995). I guess I've done that because of lack of a backup then (as
you've noted), and it was easy to transfer to a new phone. Well, until
the SIM size changed, that is!

Also, I've always assumed that the phone is more likely to fail than the
SIM, so in the absence of a backup the SIM method was safer. Nowadays
though, I rarely use my cellphone for anything, and I have no backup for
two reasons. Firstly, it isn't necessary with the very limited usage and
what I need is stored on my laptop (which is backed up regularly).
Secondly, I can't see a way to backup the contacts info without using
the internet and going through Google or Xiaomi cloud storage first, and
I don't use cloud storage for anything. The phone isn't rootable so the
contacts folder isn't accessible for transfer to a computer via USB.
Maybe droidkit or shizuku could get to it, but Google seems to be intent
on locking the data folders down as much as possible.
