Topic: Criminals whose evidence against them are their mobile devices
Why: Because it's a privacy issue of what others can do with your phone.

I'm always curious what LE can do with your phone in their hands,
where, in criminal cases, we get good records, under oath, of capability.

In this case, four factory resets still enabled police to recover photos.
Two of those factory resets occurred *after* the police confiscated it!

This, in the BBC news today, shows that factory resetting your phone
doesn't necessarily make the images stored on that phone, not recoverable.

"Forensic experts were also able to recover images on her mobile
showing what looked like death cap mushrooms on weighing scales."

When I saw that, I immediately thought using the word "recover" means she
factory reset it, where running a few searches confirms multiple resets!

Two of the 4 factory resets occurred while the phone was in police custody!

The Nightly reports that four factory resets were performed on one of
Patterson's devices in 2023, including a remote wipe on August 6,
which is the day *after* she handed the phone to police.

Additionally, news in Australia cite specific court testimony & judicial
summaries confirming that Patterson carried out 3 of the 4 factory resets
herself, and that these resets were part of the prosecution's argument
that she was attempting to conceal evidence (some of which they recovered).

On the topic of wiping out your phone, were you aware resets don't work?
