The fingerprint sensor was also a gimmick. If we don't live in the slums, why would we need it? Since an iOS device is a dumb terminal, it's Apple who needs it. Because you're always logged into Apple's Cupertino matrix servers. A closer parallel is removal of the basic functionality of the aux jack. OEMs remove the aux jack for the same reason they remove the sd slot. So that you're forced to buy (some of) that functionality back. In both cases, it's *impossible* to buy it back completely. Have I ever mentioned that I feel these OEM marketing tricks are brilliant? Courageous too! :)
