[Louis van Gaal](http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/louis-van-
gaal) admitted he wanted to rest match winner [Marcus
Rashford](http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/marcus-rashford)
ahead of the Aston Villa match.

The 18-year-old Mancunian striker's start against the doomed Midlanders, in
which he scored his seventh senior goal, was his 12th consecutive start since
his debut against Midtjylland in the Europa League in February.

The [United](http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-
united-fc) boss was ready to give him a breather like he gave Anthony Martial
but the Wythenshawe goalscorer convinced him otherwise.

"I wanted to change Rashford. I have doubted for a long time because he is
young and he has played the last, how many matches? You know that better than
I do," said Van Gaal.

"At the end I didn't want to do that because I wanted to take profit from his
momentum. He said he was very positive to play.

to celebrate after scoring the opening goal vs Aston Villa

He said 'I am fit to play' so then I thought I could change him before the
end. The last 15 minutes is always very important for a player so I changed
him because of that."

While Rashford talked himself into the line up, Van Gaal also chose Wayne
Rooney for a return after missing the last 13 games with a knee ligament
injury.

But the Dutch manager said his skipper was annoyed he was taken off after 67
minutes.

disappointing](http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-

"Wayne Rooney hasn't played 90 minutes in the last two and a half months. But
he was angry with me because he wanted to play for 90 minutes!" he said.

"But you could see he was losing balls in the second half and not in the first
half because he was very good in the first half. I think the goal was also his
goal.

"It shows a good spirit when you want to play for 90 minutes. But you cannot
build up your capacity in three days of training but I was very positive about
his first half."
