I know of this only because a Thunderbird update fannied with the 
profile meaning it was impossible to go back to an older version of 
Thunderbird if you didn't like the never ending UI changes.

So I have all Mozilla stuff set to tell me there are updates but do 
nothing. It gives me a chance to back up the profile then accept the 
update. Been there, been burnt.
