One less lunar crew member, Bll Anders, has died in a solo plane crash in the San Juan Islands, Washington state. Anders was lunar module pilot on Apollo 8 and took the Earthrise picture some people have seen. Anders was also a Gemini crew member (backup pilot for XI and potentially on a XIII if Gemini had had another flight) and backup CMP for Apollo 11. He left NASA for the NASC advising Nixon, and moved from there to the AEC/NRC before being Ambassador to Norway. In the private sector, he did stints GE, Textron, and the board of General Dybnamics. KING5-TV has acquired the video of the final moments of the flight. /dps -- We’ve learned way more than we wanted to know about the early history of American professional basketball, like that you could have once watched a game between teams named the Indianapolis Kautskys and the Akron Firestone Non-Skids. -- fivethirtyeight.com
