Serg "How does an electron "know" who to follow, who is the leader, or why ? are they attached with a push or pull string ? " Okay serg, let's say an electron is a moving charge, and it is following an arc. That arc will have a B field produced at right angles to its Center. Do you think that B field will influence other electrons in the same atom?

The Bohr model of an electron moving around the nucleus like a planet around the sun has been known to be wrong for almost 100 years. Electrons moving around the nucleus on a path of a retarded precessing spinny thing would be just as wrong, and for exactly the same reason. >What was it that he saw moving, Michael? >Just an 'energy wave'? >

One of the pioneers, and I think it was Bohr, even observed that the electron SLOWS DOWN at each end of its orbital. And, amazingly, he was correct. But now you ignore Bohr? If you look at http://users.accesscomm.ca/john/2electronorbital.GIF you will see that this is so. But even though the velocity drops, the acceleration remains the same, throughout.

His model tried to put electrons at
cross-purposes, magnetically,
by putting circular orbitals at different planes
and diameters.
It didn't work, but he was on the right track.
Just put all the electron matter ("distribute" it, Odd),
and the nuclear material
within the same turning/precessing disc.
That way, they all submit the same B field
all the time by turning circles around the same
Center in the same plane.
And protons offset electrons, exactly.
And if one electron is missing/extra,
that B field will be spinning around making
an electric moment as the circle sweeps out
the sphere.
And no matter how many other electrons
or protons the atom has, that electric moment
will be the same.
Just accept it, Odd.
It makes too much sense.

What's on the right track are the orbitals of quantum electrodynamics,
the things you see in Atom in a Box.

But WHY?

First of all, no, they would not all "submit the same B field" because
the current would be different and the size of the loop would be
different. If you knew the FIRST THING about how to calculate a B field
from a source you would have known that statement is nonsense.
Secondly, why do you think it is IMPORTANT for electrons to all "submit
the same B field"? No particular reason, I suppose. Just wouldn't it be
neat if it did?

In science, making sense means numerical agreement with experimental
measurements. Period, end of story. If you are using ANY OTHER meaning
of "makes sense" then you are talking irrelevancies.

For a current loop, the field at the center of the loop very much depends on both the current and the radius. As I said, if you knew the FIRST THING about how to calculate the B-field, you would know this. As it is, for your concentric orbits, not only is the radius different for each orbit, but so is the current (by a different amount than the radius is different), and so it is simply not true that the concentric orbits all give the same B field in the center. -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables

Odd "orbits all give the same B field in the center. - show quoted text -" So, Odd, does each electron contribute in any way to a B field and is each affected by what the others are doing? And if not, why not? How then, would a shortage or excess of electrons cause ions?

Don't snip out of context please. > > So, Odd, does each electron contribute in any > way to a B field and is each affected by > what the others are doing? Yes, each electron contributes to a magnetic field, just not even remotely closely to the manner in which you thought they did. The electrons affect each other by their electrostatic repulsion, yes, as well as by how they occupy the quantum mechanical states, as I've already said. > And if not, why not? > How then, would a shortage or excess of > electrons cause ions? An ion is simply defined as an atom that has more or less electrons than it has protons. So if you add an electron to an atom, it is automatically an ion. If you remove an electron from an atom, it is automatically an ion. Why is this hard? -- Odd Bodkin -- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
