He was known in the war (ww1) as very unusually "brave". This tells me he was still suicidal during that war, which means he was type 1 even in the war. So it may've been the world war one that changed him, although such brain nerves re-allocations should have more to do with puberty. Some people with brain issues, get them right after puberty period is over. If while fighting, he was still going through puberty then definitely it was the puberty that changed him into a type 2. I don't remember now how old he was when he went to war. He took such insane risks in that war that as a corporal managed to get a medal that no other corporal had ever gotten. It was very rare such a soldier would survive. He was still suicidal, which is a type 1.
