When it comes to the word here, if you use 'current' with respect to neurons, then you are talking about action potentials across the membranes of nerve cells. That is generally sodium in, and then potassium out. Both sodium and potassium are charged ions in this circumstance, and so like ions in the liquid solvent of a battery, you are talking about the movement of charged ions in a solution. The time that it takes for an action potential to migrate down a nerve fiber, however, is vastly slower than the speed of light. I am thinking that the thicker ones with a greater overall diameter of the fiber are faster than the thinner ones.

I am thinking that the >> thicker ones with a greater overall diameter of >> the fiber are faster than the thinner ones. > > Even the above average participant here gets lost in then. It is in a lot of biology texts. There is something called 'neurotransmitters' that are emitted at the end of 'axons' or the output of firing nerve cells. They combine with 'receptors' on the 'dendrites' or inputs of adjacent nerve cells. Now those 'receptors' can be types that inhibit firing of the adjacent nerve cell or they can increase the propensity for an adjacent nerve cell to fire. The connections themselves are called 'synapses'. Now I am thinking that when an axon connects at the end of a long nerve fiber on the adjacent cell that it tends to be a stimulating connection, and when it connects closer to the center of a cell that it can be a synapse with inhibiting receptors in the dendrite of the adjacent cell, but that could be a simplification that is way off. These receptors then open up small pores in the adjacent cell that can allow ions of sodium, potassium, or calcium on the cell's membrane to pass into or out of the cell. Nerve cells in the human body have little pumps in them that make there be more sodium on the outside than on the inside, and more potassium on the inside than on the outside. The sodium and potassium however are also in water, and so they are charged sodium and potassium ions with a positive charge. When these pores, combined with 'neurotransmitters' allow enough sodium in, the cell then 'fires'. In essence other pores open and allow much greater amounts of sodium in, 'depolarizing' the cell. When enough sodium goes inside the cell however, then other pores allow potassium to then go outside the cell, and the cell repolarises again with the cell's membrane building up an electric potential again when the potassium ions leave the cell. Once enough potassium has left those pores then close. There are also secondary channels or pores of calcium as well. In nerve cells I am thinking that they can involve 'memory' by making the fiber fire more easily in the future, and also build up the specific projection of the nerve cell to get wider or even create new branches. There are also similarities with muscle cells, for in them I am thinking that it allows actin to interact with myosin, making the muscle cell contract. For nerve cells, however, energy is expended when a nerve cell fires. This is because ion pumps in the cell membrane then expend energy to pump sodium out of the cell and potassium into the cell in balanced amounts after the cell has fired to restore the balance to enable the cell to fire again later. Thus I am thinking the human brain does expend more energy when thinking than when at rest. Different types of drugs, or alcohol, or the like tend to interact with this process in different ways. Among these nerve fibers and among these neurotransmitters there are two major types. They are called the 'sympathetic' or active nervous system and the 'parasympathetic' or resting nervous system. The 'parasympathetic' system tends to use 'acetylcholine' as a neurotransmitter. The 'sympathetic' system uses several different modified amino acids as neurotransmitters. Major ones are called, 'dopamine', 'nor-epinephrine', 'epinephrine', and 'serotonin'. Dopamine, nor-epinephrine, and epinephrine, are all modifications of the amino acid tyrosine, and serotonin is a modification of the amino acid tryptophan. Either way there is a lot of stored 'nor-epinephrine' and epinephrine in the adrenal glands, on top of the kidneys, and epinephrine is also some times called 'adrenaline'. It is often emitted when you are 'excited' so that you might more effectively engage in a 'fight or flight' response of some sort. Dopamine however deals with active sensation. Why can too much active sensation be bad in some circumstances, however? Because too much can amplify noise or distortion, not actually leading to true information about the world. This is in an array of biology textbooks on different levels. It took a lot of research throughout time to build up information on the subject. Either way I am thinking when you are talking nerve cells it might be more ions in solution, maybe something closer to the inside of a car battery than an electric wire.
