I just remembered that that EOF was sometimes used at the end of a 
text-header of a further binary file, so you could 'TYPE' the file and get 
info - but not the on-screen garbage of the binary part.

I just tried it, and indeed 'TYPE' still seems to stop at that EOF 
character. :-)
