Hi , I am new to the Debian community and want to contribute, I have presentable python skills. I came across the python-playwright package, it's current version is 1.55.0 but a upstream version 1.56.0 is available. I downloaded the tarball and ran the debmake command which created a debian folder. I saw that if I take up this job I need to do lot of changes. My query is that where can I check or ensure that there is no one else working on the package an that after complete the working according to the Debian Standards the package will be accepted? Thank you, jvk

Hi, You should start from "gbp clone git@salsa.debian.org:python-team/packages/python-playwright.git" and only do the needed incremental changes from this base, not restart all over again each time with debmake. Greetings [2025-11-28] Accepted python-playwright 1.55.0+ds-2 (source all) into unstable (Debian FTP Masters) (signed by: Roland Mas) Le mer. 3 déc. 2025 à 12:25, jvk <jaivkadam@gmail.com> a écrit : > > Hi , > I am new to the Debian community and want to contribute, I have > presentable python skills. > > I came across the python-playwright package, it's current version is > 1.55.0 but a upstream version 1.56.0 is available. > > I downloaded the tarball and ran the debmake command which created a > debian folder. I tried to clone the repo but it seems i dont have the ssh keys or i should say haven't generated them . I just made a debian salsa gitlab account but cannot login it says "Your account is pending approval from your GitLab administrator and hence blocked. Please contact your GitLab administrator if you think this is an error." :| Usually how much time this actually takes and who are the GitLab administrator in Debian? > > Greetings > > [2025-11-28] Accepted python-playwright 1.55.0+ds-2 (source all) into > unstable (Debian FTP Masters) (signed by: Roland Mas) > > Le mer. 3 déc. 2025 à 12:25, jvk <jaivkadam@gmail.com> a écrit : > > > > Hi , > > I am new to the Debian community and want to contribute, I have > > presentable python skills. > > > > I came across the python-playwright package, it's current version > > is > > 1.55.0 but a upstream version 1.56.0 is available. > > > > I downloaded the tarball and ran the debmake command which created > > a > > debian folder. What about using https instead? That will always be possible to use. gbp clone https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/packages/python-playwright.git But you should definitely start to work on that package within your namespace first and do not push your modification to the DPT namespace directly! And as mentioned in another email, get in contact with the current maintainers before work in deep! The version in the archive is quite fresh and got into the archive recently. -- Ragards Carsten

And as the person who did the initial upload, let me state quite plainly that I'll welcome any help, especially on running the testsuite :-) Roland.

For packages already in Debian, you don't need to create the debian/ folder again. > My query is that where can I check or ensure that there is no one else > working on the package an that after complete the working according to > the Debian Standards the package will be accepted? First, you can have some general information about the package in the tracker: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/python-playwright There is a link there to the VCS used to maintain it: https://salsa.debian.org/python-team/packages/python-playwright. Currently, there is no work visible to package the new upstream release. You can additionally contact the last people who work on the package, according to git commits and d/changelog, and coordinate with them. HTH, -- Santiago
