I would prefer if you didn't proceed with an NMU at this time.

Typically, these requests should be submitted via a BTS report rather
than personal email. Please report your requirement for a newer
version on the existing bug report:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1124534. It would be
helpful if you could include your specific reasons for the update,
such as personal projects or other Debian packages that require it.
