Hi Roberto,

I would be interested in helping with bmagic, following the Package
Salvaging procedure outlined in the Developers Reference[1]. From what I
see, the package seems to meet the criteria for this process, and I'd
like to support keeping it maintained in Debian. As the Salvage process
suggests, here is a list of the criteria that I believe apply:

  - RC Bugs filed against the package do not have answers from the
    maintainer.
  - Upstream has released several versions
  - There are QA issues with the package.

I believe the package would be a great addition to the Science team, and
I took the liberty to create the Salsa repository here[2]. If you choose
not to accept the ITS, I'd be more than happy to help you move it to
another location, such as debian/, or wherever you prefer. My goal is to
make it as easy as possible for you to join the team. I'd also be
delighted to assist in adding you as a team member if you could share
your Salsa login.

This package was highlighted in the Bug of the Day[3] initiative, which
aims to introduce newcomers to manageable tasks and guide them through
the workflow to solve them. The focus of this initiative is on migrating
packages to Salsa, as it's a great way to help newcomers become familiar
with a consistent Git-based workflow.

Kind regards
    Andreas.

Thank you so much for reaching out about this package! It has been my
intent for a while now to orphan the package, but have not so far for
lack of time.

I actually have a local Git repository with history going back quite
far. It is structured for gbp, with the conventional branches master,
upstream, and pristine-tar. If you would like to create an empty repo
and let me know the location, I can push the history, including all the
signed tags that I have made. Your help is very much appreciated and I
would be most glad to see bmagic start to receive better attention than
I have paid to it the last few years.

If the prior history doesn't interest you, that's fine too. Feel free to
go ahead and completely take over the package.

Regards,

-Roberto

While the history might have some value I think it now makes more work
thank finally needed if I might include it now. I think I will upload
tomorrow, wait until it migrated to testing and will later split the doc
into some extra binary package.

Do you want to remain listed as Uploader (which I would prefer but
asking since you said you wanted to orphan the package).

Kind regards
    Andreas.

It would be better to remove me as uploader altogether.

Done. What about the address

   Athena Capital Research <acr-debian@athenacr.com>

as Uploader? I've just uploaded including this Uploader but it would be
good to know for me who is with me in the team.

Thanks a lot for your cooperation
    Andreas.

I think it is a good idea to remove ACR. I've not heard from anyone
there in more than 2 years, including in reference to some inquiries
concerning the packages that they had been sponsoring (i.e., bmagic and
a few others). The email address still works (I know because I receive
messages directed there), but their websites are offline. According to
archive.org, their websites were last up around 2 years ago.

-Roberto

I noticed that this email address is set as maintainer for the following
remaining packages:

sparsehash (might be maintained by Debian Science)
mysql++ (might be maintainerd by MariaDB and MySQL packaging team)
quickfix (RC bug, several NMUs, low popcon - do we need this?)

I'm interested in migrating sparsehash and mysql++ to the suggested
teams. I'm not sure about quickfix. If you think its not needed any
more it would be great if you could file a RoM bug. If you think it
makes sense in Debian I'd volunteer to have a look and do a QA upload
after migrating it to Debian team.

Kind regards
    Andreas.

Please go ahead with migrating sparsehash and mysql++. I too am unsure
about quickfix. I think that it might have been superseded by another
package, so it might be best to remove it. As you have already taken
over bmagic and will also take over sparsehash and mysql++, I will make
time this week to assess quickfix and either file a RoM or start working
on getting it back into a better state.

Regards and thanks so much for your help with these.

Regards,

-Roberto
