I'm getting the above message when in a group and typing 'a' to Send a Message. Newsgroups:
name.of.newsgroup, is specified which is listed in the server summary. Is there any reason why the group
would be unknown? How can I resolve this warning?

I'm using news.eternal-september.org as my NNTP server, so not sure if
it's specific to it.

Maybe because you aren't subscribed to it.

I meant maybe not subscribed to the group. If you go to the list of
groups and press ^ you can see the list of servers. Select the
eternal-september one and see the active news groups. Move to the one
you want and press u.

Trying u out. First item I noticed is group was subscribed to in
summary buffer, but I lost eternal-september NNTP server in ^ list. I
had to exit gnus and M-x gnus again to see eternal-september in ^ list.

I'm subscribed now and press C-c C-c and still am seeing subject line
warning message. Is there something else required for subscription?
