Oh wow, you replied..! I never got this in my inbox somehow...

I guess it is syntactic sugar (although Greg's post shows it isn't
entirely straightforward to implement in bash). But it's a useful
addition and making sense given existing syntax. So now just hoping for
someone to do a sample implementation!!
