In order to diagnose that, try setting a very simple prompt, like PS1='\h:\w\$ ' and see if you still have the same problem. If the problem goes away, then your PS1 variable is incorrect. If your prompt contains terminal escape sequences (colors, boldface, adding information to the title bar, etc.), every one of those sequences must be inside \[ \] delimiters.
