" Lo". Il y a 50 ans, cette suite énigmatique de deux lettres est
entrée dans l'Histoire. Le 29 octobre 1969, Charley Kline, étudiant à
l'Université de Californie à Los Angeles (UCLA), envoie le tout premier
message sur l'ARPANET, l'embryon de notre Internet moderne. Depuis son
"ordinateur" SDS Sigma 7, il tente d'initialiser la communication entre
une autre machine (SDS 940), située à plus de 550 km à l'institut de
recherche de Stanford dans la région de San Francisco, en tapant
"Login" (pour Connexion). Après deux lettres, le système plante ...
La connexion sera établie après un deuxième essai.

Le journal de bord du laboratoire (photo utilisée en tête d'article)
immortalisera le dialogue entre les deux équipes californiennes. Dans
cet historique apparaît ainsi à la ligne du 29 octobre, 22h30 : "Talked
to SRI Host to Host" ( A parlé à Stanford research Institut de terminal
à terminal).

Le professeur Leonard Kleinrock nous fait visiter le salle du "Boelter
Hall 3420" où a été envoyé le premier message sur l'ARPANET le
29 octobre 1969

C'est depuis le Boelter Hall 3420 de l'UCLA que ce message a été
transmis. Cette pièce, véritable panthéon des temps modernes, a été
depuis rebaptisée "Kleinrock Internet Heritage site" en l'honneur de
Leonard Kleinrock, qui était à la tête de cette équipe qui a réussi
pour la première fois à faire "parler" deux ordinateurs distants de
plusieurs centaine de kilomètres. Il est l'un des précurseurs de la
communication par paquets utilisée encore aujourd'hui par Internet.
Le professeur Kleinrock est entré au temple de la renommée d'Internet
en 2012, pour son rôle de pionnier du réseau des réseaux ...

Internet est un peu plus jeune que moi, et je suis très attaché aux
idéaux des fondateurs. C'est pourquoi j'en parle, ne te déplaises.
Dans l'année, nous aurons fêté les 30 ans du WEB, et 50 pour Internet.
