Yes; I have been doing this for many years for SMTP and NNTP. You will
need to use a packet-driver version of KA9Q, with appropriate packet
driver software; KA9Q then uses the packet driver to talk to a network
card rather than a modem, and the network card then exchanges packets
with the broadband router.

I use a KA9Q variant (GremNOS) as my mail server and NNTP client,
running on an old Windows XP box with the SwsVpkt packet driver, talking
to the rest of the world via my (non-Demon, obviously) FTTC connection.

I don't know whether you would want/need to use DOS; it might be
slightly harder to get it working on a proper DOS machine, due to the
memory footprint of the packet driver software. I haven't used a real
DOS machine for many years, so I probably wouldn't be able to help much
(but I know someone with more current DOS+GremNOS experience who might
be able to help).

I presume this is a dialup account rather than broadband? I hadn't
realised that Demon were actually shutting the dialup accounts down;
sigh.

As you may (mr may not?) know, Demon have been closing down people's
hostname.demon.co.uk e-mail access for a few months now, requiring them
to sign up for an e-mail package with Namesco if they wish to retain
their e-mail addresses (but that will apparently be only for a short
while); this follows on from Demon moving everyone's web pages to
Namesco back in April 2015.

There has been a great deal of discussion of this on demon.service; some
people were notified by Demon that they would be losing their e-mail
service in 30 days if they didn't move it to Namesco, while others
simply had their mail access cut off with no warning.

Why Demon are claiming that you need to talk to Namesco to close down
your Demon account is a mystery, but it seems there hasn't been anyone
left at Demon who knows anything about anything for some time now.

Sorry, I can't help with them; I see what you mean about excessive use
of the words "free" and "unlimited". But if their dialup access really
is free, what have you got to lose by giving them a try (other than the
0845 calll charges)?
