Indeed - I build Lynx 2.9.2 without --enable-socks, and SOCKS works fine
for me.

You *can* build Lynx against libsocks (e.g. as provided by Dante:
https://www.inet.no/dante/), but you don't need to - if you look at
WWW/Library/Implementation/HTTCP.c, in the HTDoConnect function, there's
built-in SOCKS client code that's enabled even if SOCKS isn't defined.
