I don't have experience with Android, but here is my experience
transitioning from Palm (many years of data) to Apple iPod Touch.

One of my requirements is that I am NOT going to send my personal
calendar/contacts/todo/notes data through a distant server ("the cloud")
in order to sync with my desktop computer. I am certainly not going to
store my data in the cloud, either.

I am able to sync (and back up) my data using only my devices in my
home. Unfortunately, third party software vendors have to use WiFi to
sync with desktop. Apple does not offer a method for them to sync data
via USB. It is inconvenient. If you have 5 third party apps that sync
with your desktop computer, then you have to command each app to do its
WiFi sync function.

Clearly, the iPod Touch is *not* as good a PDA as a Palm Pilot. It is
the closest approximation that I could find. I had to use a third party
app for "To-Do," which surprised me. Apple's To-Do application was
non-existent a few years ago. Now it is merely lame. I miss Palm, but
no use crying over spilled milk. Breathe in, breathe out, move on.
