Not sure where that 14% comes from. Is it against the same quarter last year? No - that would be 4% up. Is it these past 4 quarter v the prior? No - that would be down, somewhat. In the 4th quarter, 2015, 4-quarter average sales were 5146000 units per quarter. Now, it's 4677000 units per quarter (average of 4 quarters). In the last quarter, 4199000 units were sold. The only time it's been lower is 2016Q2 ... before that 2014Q2. So, while Mr. Cook appropriately spins thing, Mac sales are not all that hot at present and far off of the highs of late 2015/early 2016. 2015Q4: 5709000 2015Q2: 4199000 ... that's 26% fewer units. Any company would kill for these numbers - and especially margins - of course. Apple has been through a similar cycle ending in 2013 - seems to be a 4 year "roll". If that cycle repeats (and cycles don't necessarily do so), Apple could see stellar numbers in 4 years from now. -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing.

Not sure where that 14% comes from. JF quoted the wrong figure. Mac Revenue is up 14% compared to the same quarter last year. Mac Units Sales are up 4% compared to the same quarter last year. That's two quarters in a row with a small year-over-year increase, but they still have a way to go before making up for the 2016 slump. More updated models would help. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

"Updated" is not enough. The latest "MacBook Amateurs," which tack on gimmicks while removing functionality that photographers have come to rely upon, have cost Apple one sale as I am committed to buying used MacBook Pros until such time as Apple comes around. SD cards are the removable storage for many cameras. Having an SD slot in a portable computer for photographers to offload their media is about as perfect a solution as can be. Having to have a dongle is additional stuff to carry and possibly lose just before it is most urgently needed. And you bring up SCSI? Really. They'd naturally prefer that valuable space be used for more versatile ports, making this a complete non-issue for most people. Many people realize the reality is dongles have been needed with laptops for many years due to the sheer number of different devices one might want to connect to a laptop. Anyone working in a large corporate environment knows this well, and it doesn't apply only to Macs, either. Could be - but as Apple are so into the creatives field you would think they would support them in a positive fashion. Nobody likes dongles. There's tons of unused edge space on the side of the MPB - so that argument does not have wings. Apple's "drive" here is not about what is the best i/o set. It's about thinness for thinness and lowered cost of manufacturing. >> Having to have a dongle is additional stuff to carry and possibly lose >> just before it is most urgently needed. > > "THE DONGLES - THEY SUCK!! I say suck it up and get some real > work done, snowflakes! I've always had laptops (in the recent era) that had USB. So many peripherals of course have USB. Dongles suck and I don't have, need or use any. (One at work as a backup for Ethernet access is there if needed. Not even sure what drawer it's in). I don't have other dongles for my laptops. Indeed the only dongle I do have is on my iMac for the DVI to the side display. That's permanent so I don't care. For laptops, portability, dongles are crap and to be avoided. As in the YouTube video I posted further up. For his needs, 3 different dongles. When you travel a lot a single dongle is a dongle too many. Whether for inconvenience, cost or losing them and being unable to do something you need to do. -- "If war is God's way of teaching Americans geography, then recession is His way of teaching everyone a little economics." ..Raj Patel, The Value of Nothing.
