| Message-ID | <oaq2qe$6q7$1@dont-email.me> |
I was just trying to play a video that I posted on my website some years ago. In Firefox, I got the error message, "Video format or MIME type is not supported." In Safari, it said, "Missing Plug-in." When I clicked on that notice, I got a new window that said, "This webpage has content that requires the 'QuickTime' plug-in. To view this content you need this plug-in. For more information, visit the plug-in's website." But when I clicked "More Info," I was taken to the main Safari site. A search for "QuickTime plug-in" on Apple's website turned up no results. The video in question is in .mov format. Do I need to convert the video (and other .mov videos on my website) to some other format in order for them to be viewable nowadays? Or are there different variations in the .mov format and it's still usable if I use some other form of .mov? Patty

The QuickTime plugin is a standard one included with the OS, but it has been disabled by default in the last few OS versions. https://support.apple.com/HT205081 In addition, some web browsers are now actively blocking most plugins, so it might not work in Firefox even if you enable the plugin. > The video in question is in .mov format. Converting the video to a more modern cross-platform format (e.g. MPEG-4/H.264) would be a better choice, as many people will be unable to view QuickTime video from web sites without a lot of mucking around. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I wonder why I got no results when I searched for "QuickTime plug-in" on Apple's website. I thought that search included support.apple.com. I found the instructions for reinstalling the plug-in on my MacBook. The video is working for me now, but of course that doesn't let me share it with other people. (Since I originated the video, I already had it in a viewable form off the web.) >In addition, some web browsers are now actively blocking most plugins, >so it might not work in Firefox even if you enable the plugin. It's working in Safari, but not Firefox. I might be able to do something about FF, but now that I know that that won't fix the problem for other people, I'm not sure it's worth it. >Converting the video to a more modern cross-platform format (e.g. >MPEG-4/H.264) would be a better choice, as many people will be unable to >view QuickTime video from web sites without a lot of mucking around. Yeah, apparently not. I'm not seeing any codec options when I choose Export from QT Player 10. It just asks what resolution I want and for what device. In QT7 Pro, I see several export options, including MPEG-4. Do you recommend that? BTW, what are we all going to do when QT7 Pro eventually stops working with some future Mac OS? I don't want to have to buy some expensive video-editing program! Patty

BTW, I just discovered that the .mov file on my website is actually just an 85KB pointer to an .m4v file that has the actual video. However, that doesn't change the results of the Inspector, which says that it's an H.264 video. Patty

So the real mystery is why QuickTime does not just play it. That is about as universal a format as you could expect to get. QuickTime, iTunes, and QuickLook in Finder should all play it. Does it make a difference if you play the file directly, rather than use this .mov pointer? A.

I can play the file anywhere I want; it's my video, so I already have the file on my computer. The question is how I can make this video and other old videos on my website easily viewable by other people. IOW, viewable via a web browser; not making them download a video and use some other application on their computer to view it. Patty

Well, I'm getting a cat walking around on a bed. However, it occurs to me that I do actually have QT 7 installed alongside QT 10. That may or may not be relevant. /Library/QuickTime/ contains 2 items: AppleIntermediateCodec.component AppleMPEG2Codec.component I'm wondering if the latter might be involved since it has a copyright of 2011 leading me to believe it was installed by QuickTime 7.
