No, the only choices were to disable on the current machine or to remove
from all machines. There was no option to remove only from one machine.

I only make a couple of online purchases every month. My virtual account
numbers are good for two months at a given store, but it would be unusual
for me to shop at the same store that often.

Not too often, no.

Disable on the current machine isn't doing it on only one machine?

It only disabled the account, it didn't delete it. The account was still
in my Internet Accounts list, only with the notation "Inactive." It's the
same effect you get by unchecking all the options in the "Use With" list.

Hence whatever file had been corrupted was not removed and I still couldn't
get Mail to see the "INBOX" path prefix. It was only when I went ahead and
removed the account from both computers, then created a new account for the
same ISP, that the problem went away.

Ah, good catch. I wasn't you actually hit that button to try it out.

Hasn't she been pretty insistent that she "needs" to store emails on her
Mac so they are "safe"?

At the very least. Probably superuser. They're born knowing how to sudo. :-)

Letting your cat administer your computer? I suspect he's got it out for
you and is messing with your settings.
