Yup. Linux has no unified UX strategy; it's a cluster fuck for desktop
usage.

Choosing an OS that works well and has a wide range of software is not
giving up freedom.

Really comes down to you are free to choose Linux, Windows, macOS, or even
other things if you want. Or, as I do, a mix of them.

Freedom to spend hours of your "free" time hacking your system,
twiddling this or that, recompiling this or that, installing laborious
updates, and so on, just so your computer will do what you wanted in the

The Linux users in COLA have been challenged to produce a video
demonstrating how Linux is superior at P.E.E.
Productivity.
Error Reduction
Efficiency

And they have never been able to do it.
They enjoy telling others how superior Linux is but when it comes to
actually showing it, they can't so instead they run away and hide behind
kill files, as you have discovered.

And when they do point out Linux's strengths they are always the same
ones that nobody disagrees with like package management, access to source
code, free and such.

Ask a Linux user to go beyond that and show how say Ubuntu is superior
for an end user as compared to Windows 10 and they will run away.
Ask them to post a video demonstrating superiority of Linux and they
suddenly disappear.
Crickets comes to mind.

Nope, just a grown-up who is paid well to work in the hardware and
software design and development fields who values his free time way more
than Linux dweebs. What Linux zealots will never get is sometimes the
computer should work for *you* rather than the other way around. : )

There is no question that the apps advantage of Windows (and, to a
lesser extent, Mac) is important, in many situations. But not 98% of
situations. With so much computing now being Web-based, many would be
better-served by GNU/Linux, but do not know it.

The monopolists keep the Free alternative out of the public eye, so
that it remains "obscure". The sheep are kept in the flock largely by
fear of the unknown.

How do these "monopolists" do that, exactly?

Tell us PRECISELY what Apple has done to keep Linux "out of the public eye".

Simple. The OS is preinstalled, ready to use. This is true for windows and
OSX.
Most of the users would not dare to install /any/ OS (no matter which one)
on their computer, they are only able to use them, but not to install the
OS.

This fact alone keeps linux off those computers in most cases.

My wife has used a linux machine for more than 10 years without missing
anything (and she is a teacher). She would never attempt to install a OS.

And that prevents Linux from getting in the public eye in other ways...

...how?

exactly why linux has failed on the desktop. if someone can't run the
apps they need to run, linux is not an option. at all.

and macs have the *most* options for software, given that a mac can
natively run all mac/windows/linux apps, all on the same box.

a number you made up.

those who do little more than web surf and email might be ok with
web-based solutions, but the majority won't for a whole shitload of
reasons, namely privacy and that the size of data is often too big to
be practical for web solutions, such as video editing.

nonsense. nobody is keeping anything out of the public eye.

people are well aware of all of the options. the problem is they have
real work to do, not screw around with free apps that claim to be
'equivalent' and are usually far worse and much slower, resulting in
lower productivity. that makes 'free' more expensive than paid.

the simple fact that something that's free can't compete with something
that costs money says a lot, none of it good.

linux is only 'free' if your time is worth nothing.
