maybe this is a feature of wifi or wifi chips even

is there any way to shutoff the constant quest for new aps


once i have a wifi connection it seems that the mbp still looks for
new aps

It's not constant.

Only because you are telling it to. Stop viewing the list of available
access points and it will stop updating said list. If you are pulling down
the WiFi menu, then of course the access point list will update
periodically while you are viewing the list.
