#98578 — Installing OS on 2007 iMac with a dead hard drive

SubjectInstalling OS on 2007 iMac with a dead hard drive
Message-ID<D49D6B02.8A372%usenet@gallopinginsanity.com>
Is there any way to reinstall the OS from the network on an iMac from that
era? I know newer ones let you do so.

I no longer have the DVD that came with the machine and the hard drive
recently died. Will likely just get an external drive and not bother trying
to open the machine.

Thanks... but only goes back to 2010. The iMac is from 2007 (Intel Core 2
Duo, 2.4 GHZ... I think).

Which means there seems to be no way to do it.

Will likely run Linux on it... but would prefer OS X.

a mac that old can't network install the os.

then install os x. you just have to download it and install it, or just
clone a backup drive. no big deal.

It was not in the store but I see I can download it the Combo Updaters. Will
those do a full install? I do not think so.

updaters are not full installers.
You can still buy Snow Leopard on DVD from the Apple Store:
<http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard>

Cheers

Did not know they still sold it. Not worth putting much money into the
machine, but $20 is doable. THANKS!

free:

There are these things called USB sticks and installers...

Yes, but I first have to have the installer to put on the USB stick. Might
ask around... likely have a friend who has one.

I foolishly tossed mine just a couple months ago.

Flash drives are cheap these days. Just don't install the OS on it. 2 of
my 64 GB flash drives died just from installing and booting up. :(
