Which SQLite browser?

I tried a couple. Probably it was <SQLite Database Browser 2.0> (which I
know is old, but its descendant <DB Browser for SQLite 3.9> had some
other problems). The database was created by an app I've been using for
over a decade; maybe that's part of the problem??

No idea. I've never used a GUI app to mess with SQLite databases; I always
just did it on the command line or through scripting. I was just curious
what you were using.

In my experience, if the "Show Package Contents" option is available
then the package is really just a directory, and you can use
/path/package_name/Contents to see what is inside.

Yes, but as isw indicated, open/save dialogs can hide subordinate items
within packages, as well as other items that are normally invisible in
Finder windows. See my reply for a workaround.

And lovely workaround that it is, I'm not sure that opening the package
in a separate window and dragging the contents into an open/save
dialoge box qualifies as 'directly navigating' as requested by the OP.

Maybe - depends on the definition of "directly navigating" though.
Nevertheless it's way faster and simpler to drag a folder into the dialog
than it is to type a file path.

Sometimes the simplest way.

Similar to iPhoto database. You have some app that wants a photo. n
iPhoto, there is a "show in finder". That gets you a finder window with
sleceted photo highlighted. Take it and drag it to the file open
dialogue and you get to it.

Using the ⇧-⌘-G shortcut to simply go to the folder you want is much
simpler and doesn't require bouncing out to the finder and then back and
then having a spurious finder window open. Much cleaner.

Heh... Manually typing a full path to some random file is more work than
dragging a file into the window where I'm from (and I type for a
living). But to each, his own - do whatever works best for you.

You don't have to type the path as Apple path completing is fast.

Type /A<tab>/Pa<tab>/C<tab> will take you into
/Applications/Pages.app/Contents (depending on what other apps you may
have).

Yes and it's still more work. Use what you want though.

Switch to finder, open up a window (or switch to "Applications", find
the app in the list. Rclick. Choose show package contents. Drag icon
from titlebar (or Contents folder) to open dialog. Do whatever. Switch
back to finder and close the extra window.

Doesn't seem noticeably faster, and it requires switching apps, which I
find a distraction.

Except you DON'T have to type a full path.

1. Navigate to the directory containing the package you want to access.

2. Cmd-shift-G and type enough of the packages name to use tab
auto-completion, then type "Contents" and click "OK" or hit Return.

Voila.

Sigh. Thunderbird doesn't make quoting easy.
