Priced HP or Lenovo AIOs vs. iMacs lately? How about Dell, Asus, HP,
Acer notebooks vs. the MacBook family?

Hey, I'm not knocking Apple products, my family owns and happily uses
seven of them- iPhones to iMacs. They're just too damned expensive.

Timmie gouges the crap out of his customers. But hey, I own a good chunk
of Apple stock so I'm not complaining!

sure have.

the dell 5k display alone (no computer) costs roughly what a complete
imac 5k does.

nope.

the google pixel android phone, introduced this past tuesday, is priced
exactly the same as the iphone 7 and does *less*.

the samsung galaxy note 7 (ignoring the battery issue) is priced
*higher* than an iphone.

nope.

Sure, you can cherry pick an item here and there to counter my point but
on average, I'm right.

You also might want to check the definition of hypocrite so you can stop
name-calling people using the wrong label...

i'm not cherry picking, and on average, you're very wrong.

as i said before, apple products are similarly priced for similar specs.

what *you* are doing is cherry picking, by comparing bottom barrel pcs
to top of the line macs. that's bullshit.

someone who buys stock for a company they hate is a hypocrite.

Knock yourself out. How much does Dell charge for a 5K 27" AIO machine
of comparable speed and power and expansion to an 2015 iMac?

Nope.

Apple doesn't play the race to the bottom game.

Yes: they're products are more expensive, but they're very rarely 2-3x
higher for similarly performing systems.

Yes, I have, actually. The HP All-In-One systems available at
http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/desktops/hp-all-in-one-349517--1#!&Tab=vao all
have smaller displays (19.5” vs 21”, except for one, or 23.8” instead
of 27”) and low-end Celeron and AMD CPUs. They have less RAM, and, usually,
smaller, slower hard drives. The HP Pavilion series machines at
http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/desktops/pavilion-23-all-in-one-349518--
1#!&Tab=vao are better, but the low end ones are still fitted with i3s and
low-end AMDs. The high-end ones have i7s, but slower i7s than iMacs.
Admittedly those slower i7s are Skylakes rather than Broadwells, The displays
continue to be 23.8” HD, no 4k or 5k displays in sight. And whereas the
first group really was priced at half or less of what an iMac was priced at,
the high-spec (close to iMac spec) Pavilions are priced at something within
$200-300 of an iMac... for a lower spec system. The Pavilion 27s, at

1#!&Tab=vao are (finally) fitted with 27” displays, but still HD, no 4k or
5k. They do have Skylake CPU, though. The brand new Envys at
http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/desktops/envy-27-all-in-one-349515--1#! finally
have 4k displays... and are priced within a few hundred dollars of iMacs.
Yes, the HPs are cheaper. They’re not dramatically cheaper, not at similar
specs. the elcheapo systems all have Celeron or similar CPUs, small RAM fits,
low-end graphics capability, low-end displays (some still have TN displays!)
and usually smaller slower hard drives. Apple simply doesn’t sell systems
of that spec, which explains why Apple doesn’t sell systems at that price
point.

As for the laptops... I personally have an Asus laptop. It’s 5 years old
and getting wonky. it’s notably slow, in either Win 7 or Win 10. I have to
reboot every ever so often when it refuses to detect wireless or even wired
network connections, or worse, does detect them but for whatever reason
can’t see the Internet using them. A reboot cures this. The battery never
gave me the promised 3.5 hours; it’s now under 2.5 hours, and, worse, since
I put Win 10 on it, every now and again it spontaneously shuts down even when
there’s lots of battery life. I know it’s something to do with Win 10 as
I have Win 7 on a separate partition and it never spontaneously shuts down
when booted Win 7. The keyboard has, erm, issues. The less said about the
trackpad, the better. There would be a reason why I bought an external
wireless mouse. The Asus cost me around $1000, which was markedly cheaper
than a MacBook Pro of similar spec at the time that I bought it. However,
MBPs of that vintage are still going strong, using Apple’s latest OS. I
will be replacing the Asus with a MBP. I’m just waiting for the alleged new
MBPs which should be introduced on 27 Oct 2016.

linux and an ssd will prolong its life and probably improve battery
performance

Wrong. Linux often does a much worse job of preserving battery life:

<http://askubuntu.com/questions/158778/why-does-ubuntu-have-about-2x-shorter-battery-life-than-os-x-on-macbook>

Also Linux is best suited for servers and is an extremely poor choice for a
desktop operating system.

Linux? Improve battery life? Bwahahahahahaha!

You are delusional.

It's not about my service, but the timing. My 'cycle' ends on the 12th
of the month. If I'm near cap, then I can wait 'til the 13th to
download. If I'm way under cap then I want to do as much updating as
possible in the current cycle. When my son is staying here, he gets to
pay the $5 bump for an extra 25 GB if we go over.

If I bought the next level I'd end up wasting tons of BW for nothing.
Money wasted.

Note that a Windows machine to the same spec as an iMac with quad core
i7, etc, would not be cheap. Discount the screen of the iMac (which is
tremendous value in itself) and a Mac is very good value. Exp

Secondly, I run a given iMac for at least 5 years - but I've got the
notion this one can easily go 7 or 8 before I feel the need for an update.

Paying $20/month more for bandwidth that I don't typically need would be
wasting money. Let's see $20 x 12 x 5 years=$1200. Enough to buy half
of a new iMac... seems the right move to me.

Maybe if you hit mom up for an increase in allowance, you wouldn't be

no that is incorrect the download happens no matter what

> Still, I don't think 5 gig downloads should happen without user's

ne meither

but the real question to ask is why are they forcing this

since it is a departure from past updates we can make some guesses

there are some serious flaws in el capitan that cannot and will not
get fixed and which are being actively exploited now

maybe the new bug bounty only applies to el capitan and there are
so many it has become a problem

they want more user data and more people locked in to the cloud
because the cloud is so great and they want to make sure everyone
benefits from that greatness

they want to simplify the supported code base across all their
hardware so the sooner everyone gets to sierra the better

they want to obosolete mountains of hardware to force new purchases

they just want their customers to be happy and joyful using the
new os and so they want to force it on them because sometimes
joy and happiness needs to be forced on the sheep to remind them
they are joyful and happy and nothing else
