While it purportedly downloaded 10.12.1, (certainly burned bandwidth long enough) and I could see it in /Applications, as soon as the DL was complete, the version in /Applications disappeared. I was about to install, and decided to eject my external disks first. The volume where the prior 10.12.0.57 installer was kept would not eject. I quit App Store and the installer and then it ejected. But then, when I fired up App Store to install again, nothing happened - so it appears to be wanting to install 10.12.0.57. (The prior "0" version was 10.12.0.49). So this is quite bizarre. I think it found the older installer on the external drive and erased the copy on the system disk (/applications). I can't find it at all. Or it moved 10.12.0.57 to one of the external drives. I'll try installing 0.57, otherwise back to App Store to DL (again) 10.12.1. (Could 10.12.1 be contained in 10.12.0.57 ???). -- She hummed to herself because she was an unrivaled botcher of lyrics. -Nick (Gone Girl), Gillian Flynn.

So I'll have to try the App store again but leave the external drives off Tried an install with the 12.10.0.57 version after copying it to my system disk. It went through what appeared to be a complete install - but I ended up at 10.12.1 in any case. Finder is still mis-behaving. So, one more try with the App store and the supposed 10.12.1 version Just not yet. -- She hummed to herself because she was an unrivaled botcher of lyrics. -Nick (Gone Girl), Gillian Flynn.

I have yet to try another user account, that is true. I'll do that right after I post this. But I have cleared two relevant plists in ~/Library/preferences and re-booted. I've reset the SMC. A search on the web for this - nothing. Bug Report to Apple resulted in them asking for a diagnostic upload. (Press Shift-Control-Option-Command-something (very awkward) while the Finder was spinning). This resulted in a 350 MB upload to bug reporter. Haven't heard boo since. Nothing obvious - I did look a couple weeks ago when I first brought this up. There was one "oddball" in there but I couldn't connect it via searching the web for a cause/solution. Just -deleted both plists in ~/library/preferences -put all disks in the Spotlight "ignore" list (system and externals) -emptied the trash -cold start -removed the system disk from "ignore" list .it's indexing ... alas a test shows it doing the same thing. unless there is some other way to reset finder/spotlight then I'll try kitchen sink v.3.2 (attempt to force 10.12.1 to DL and install over the delta update). unless that works, then I'll be forced to do a clean install. -- She hummed to herself because she was an unrivaled botcher of lyrics. -Nick (Gone Girl), Gillian Flynn.

Does Finder Search use a system-wide search, or account specific documents only ? AKA: does login in as Admin seach the same directories as when you are logged into your normal account ? One possibility is that you have a/many document(s) in your directory that the search engine barfs on and causes the spinning beachball of death. The other mac here is 10.12 so that might be the way there - I should be able to put the "full" 10.12.1 installer onto it. I'll DL the full installer to that Mac and not install and then move it here. -- She hummed to herself because she was an unrivaled botcher of lyrics. -Nick (Gone Girl), Gillian Flynn.

That probably means you have another copy of the Sierra installer somewhere visible to App Store (apart from in a Time Machine backup): the download will replace any existing copy of the same app it can find, rather than remaining in /Applications. If your other copy of the Sierra installer is on an external volume, eject that volume before doing the download. If your other copy of the Sierra installer is in a different folder on the same volume, you need to put it in a folder that is in the privacy list for Spotlight so App Store can't find it (and might need to restart after doing that, so the App Store support software doesn't retain a reference to the previous file via an in-memory alias which tracks the moved file). I installed Sierra today from a copy of the Sierra installer downloaded after the MacBook Pro announcement event, and I'm on 10.12.1 as expected. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

That was my plan. Now, following Andreas' idea, I'll DL the complete 10.12.1 to my SO's MBA and interrupt the install and move the installer to this iMac. > If your other copy of the Sierra installer is in a different folder on > the same volume, you need to put it in a folder that is in the privacy > list for Spotlight so App Store can't find it (and might need to restart > after doing that, so the App Store support software doesn't retain a > reference to the previous file via an in-memory alias which tracks the > moved file). Sneaky devils. > I installed Sierra today from a copy of the Sierra installer downloaded > after the MacBook Pro announcement event, and I'm on 10.12.1 as > expected. I did the delta update to 10.12.1. I hoped the delta would solve the issue but it hasn't. If a full write over of 10.12.1 doesn't do it, I think I'll be forced to the clean install route - not having found any solution to the Finder Search pinwheeling. As a side note - while it seems related to Spotlight, Spotlight searches are not affected. -- She hummed to herself because she was an unrivaled botcher of lyrics. -Nick (Gone Girl), Gillian Flynn.

(Could 10.12.1 be contained in 10.12.0.57 ???). Secondary point: you are getting the installer version numbers mixed up. For example, it isn't "10.12.0.57" (or "12.10.0.57" you used in a later post), just "12.0.57". Since Apple introduced the App Store distribution of Mac OS X with 10.7 Lion, the installer application version number has had no connection with the version number of Mac OS X (or OS X or macOS) which it installs. The only clue is that a higher installer version number is for a later OS version. The older ones I have handy: Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion): installer version is 1.0.34 OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion): installer version is 1.3.29 OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks): installer version is 1.3.46 OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite): installer version is 1.6.43 OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan): installer version is 1.7.50 Sierra has improved the situation slightly. The major version number of the installer is now 12, which coincides with Sierra's minor version number. The rest of the installer version number still has nothing to do with the version or build number of the OS it will install (apart from relative order of version numbers). macOS 12.0: installer version is 12.0.49 macOS 12.0.1: installer version is 12.0.57 One other small tidbit: the Sierra installer is the first which contains an easily located file with the installed system version number, at this relative path: ./Contents/SharedSupport/InstallInfo.plist The "version" key inside the "System Image Info" key has a string value of "10.12" or "10.12.1" respectiely for the above two installers. (It doesn't reveal the build number of the installed OS.) For El Capitan and earlier, I couldn't find the installed system version number without opening the installer with Pacifist, or poking around inside InstallESD.dmg. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Except it wasn't between Monday and Thursday this week - App Store still had the 10.12 installer after 10.12.1 was released, until the media event on Thursday had finished. To answer Alan's question: delete your current copy of the 10.12 installer (or keep an archive copy offline, in case you ever want to reinstall the original release), then use App Store to download Sierra again from the Featured page. It is now a full 10.12.1 installer, which will let you install over an existing 10.12.1 (without affecting user accounts, etc.). -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz
