My family and I have each a Desktop and a Laptop and I really don't
want to download 500 MB 9 more times. I can't find the usual Download
anywhere, so I can pull it once and then Ethernet or WiFi it to the
other boxes.

Any advice?

Have you tried to manually copy the update file to other computer? The 
pkg files are in subfolder of /Library/Updates. I haven't tested if this 
works, though.

Someone recently complained that Apple was forcing updates on us.

Several of us pointed out that it's not forced if you have a choice.

Well, my NON-admin account was asked if I wanted to install the already 
downloaded update.

I had ALL checkboxes OFF associated with automation on updates.  The 
first install of Sierra apparently turned them all on, but at least it 
doesn't do restart installs without asking.

I turned them all off again, but did the install.  Part way through it 
puts the screen to sleep.  This is dumb, because if someone thinks the 
computer is off, they may push the power button.  No problem (yet) 
because nothing happens.  But then, if they think it is asleep, and find 
out they can't wake it up, the "solution" is to hold down the button 
until it turns off.  Which of course seriously breaks the update install.

Well, since I had initiated the update, I didn't do that.  But 
afterward, when I logged into my non-admin account again, I was 
presented with a list of "incompatible software not migrated" but there 
was NOTHING in the list!

I OK'd that, and what appeared to be a clean install set-up wizard 
appeared!  I forget how exactly I responded, but it turned out it didn't 
do anything.  (or at least it presented no further "Next" screens)

Are you sure it had already been downloaded? IME, if you don't have the
relevant boxes in the pref pane checked, the download does not actually
occur until you click the option in the (somewhat confusing)
notification alert.

Pressing the power button ought to wake the screen. It does on my Mac
during normal operation, but I don't know what happens during an OS
install.

Apparently you didn't read what you quoted.  The 10.12.0 install turned 
on all those boxes.

The full installer of Sierra on App Store hasn't been updated either -
it is still 10.12.

Maybe wait until about Thursday 12 PM US PDT (1900 UTC).

Apple might be delaying the release of the manual install 10.2.1 update
(and the full 10.12.1 installer) until after the media event on Thursday
announcing new Macs, probably in a failed effort to minimise feature
leaks (given the picture of the new MacBook Pro already leaked via the
App Store installed 10.2.1 update).

If it turns out that they aren't going to release a manual download of
the 10.2.1 update at all, then this post on MacRumors might help - it
has links to manually download the pkg versions of the installers. I
haven't had a close look at them yet so not sure which ones need to be
downloaded.

The 10.12.1 full installer is now available in App Store. It appeared
soon after the end of the media event, as I suspected.

I haven't seen the 10.12.1 delta update via
http://support.apple.com/downloads yet, but that could just be a
distribution delay. Try again in a few hours or tomorrow.

The delta update is available now (for me, others may still be waiting
for distribution to catch up):

Is there a binary for the whole 10.12.1 available for download?  I want 
to re-install.  Since I'm at 10.12.1 the 10.12 won't install over the 
existing version.

I've already updated to 10.12.1.  I need to do a complete re-install the 
whole thing in the hopes of clobbering whatever is affecting Finder on 
this machine.  OTOH, I don't want to do a clean install if I can avoid it.

over the later version.

I would just erase the volume, install a fresh operating system, and
restore from backup during when the setup assistant prompts to transfer
data to the new system.

like i said, what's in the app store is the latest version, and as of
right now, that's 10.12.1. you can't get 10.12.0 anymore from the
store.

for 10.12.0, you would need to have kept a copy (and it sounds like you
did). if so, you may need to delete it (or preferably, keep it, but
move it to where the store can't see it) so that the store lets you
download a new and updated version. then you'll have a 10.12.1
installer.

also note that it is a non-destructive install. installing macos on top
of an existing system will not affect your apps and data already on the
disk.

The OS is at 10.12.1.  The App Store POS app is not going to "offer" the 
10.12.0 or 10.12.1 full install.  All is well in its tiny mind.

What I will try is to simply re-install from 10.12 that I kept and is on 
an external drive.  (Eg: not make a bootable disk).

That's the point - avoiding a clean install.

apparently not, since the app store offers 10.12.1 full install.
