HELP! I've never had anything like this before. Yesterday morning and now twice today my new MacBook Pro (OS 10.12) just locked. Nothing works, the mouse won't work, the keyboard can invoke nothing. I was in mail once and noted that the screen is still busy: My cursor location in composing an email continued to blink, iStat menus at the top of my screen shows cpu activitiy, Little Snitch reported I was still downloading something or other, and having internet communications of blip-blip-blip variety. But otherwise, nothing works. I went and made some coffee and read the paper, came back 20 minutes later--still nothing. I operate in closed-clamshell mode. So I popped all the connectors and power, opened it and found it was complaining about having an inappropriately disconnected drive, which I had just done. I could move with trackpad to tell it to go away and thought I was fine. I scrolled to the top of my email. A second later it began the lock-up modality again. Later in the day the same thing happened though not while in email. While in the finder or Safari. Again I disconnected hoping to get back again. This time, my screen on the MacBook gave me my desktop picture and nothing else, not sure if the control bar at the top was there or not. I rebooted on all occasions but holding the power key down. I opened the console to see what I could look for, and am really a gremmie here. I don't know where to search. Where do I look to find crashes and hopefully analysis?

Usually when the screen stops responding it is a GPU or GPU driver issue. If the machine is still running when it appears locked up, I'd try unplugging the external display. You might also try running for a bit without it if possible. -- Mom: There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus? Daughter: Duh.

Anything in /Library/Logs or ~/Library/Logs? Hang logs usually end with .hang. If it persists, take it into a Genius Bar and have them hook it up to diagnostics. If the problem can be reproduced by connecting a specific drive up, bring that drive. Could be a bad cable, connector, drive or motherboard. The problem will be getting the computer to freeze in front of them. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... I'm writing on the wall: Console, ~/Library/Logs/ - .hang That's what I was looking for so I can show it to an Apple tech-head. No it can't be reproduced. I note in snooping around since that there are a number of post-Sierra-installation complaints about this and they all seem to center around operating a MacBook Pro with an external monitor or monitors. From one person dealing with Apple support there is a list of booting while holding your head just-so and such that is supposed to "help" or "clear something" or something. I have been iritated that my monitor line is a skosh short and so was thinking about getting a longer cable anyway. Who know, maybe that will help too. All cables are quite new, as is the computer is only a year old, and has been taken nowhere, except to the living room once or twice.

Just to let you know that it is not a general problem: I have a mid 2012 MBP running in clamshell mode with an external monitor. (Above the specs. The monitor has a resolution of 3440x1440.) There are no sierra-problems over here. You talked about a lot of third party software running on your machine (Little Snitch, iStat Menus, maybe some more?) First thing I would try is to look for any sierra related updates or even better: run a few days without those software to see if that is what causes the problems.

It's listed by application. If I open an application at random, since I don't know what the hell I'm looking for, there's also no dat column.

I think you misunderstand each other, gtr is not looking at a finder window but is using the Konsole app to look at the logs. And there is indeed no date column.

It certainly is; I'm trying to find out where to look, maybe in the console, maybe in folders, maybe under a rock, for residue that can tell me where and why the machine crashed. That's why I asked.

That's why I asked. You can't be serious. You trimmed off the places to look in your last reply to me! Go back to my last and read what is in the quoted portion please. Hang logs usually end with .hang. Since I was talking specifically about the console, I attempted to find what Michael was talking about using those folders *in console* and could not find a way to sort by date. Can we move on now or do I need to stay "I'm stupid" or "duh" or something?

The question of which logs were > created around the time of the event still stands. I suppose we can move on from the topic of exactly how stupid I am or am not, and exactly when I bought my first Mac. Regarding finding logs that will tell me what I need to know, I haven't found them yet. I now understand that the console is a mechanism for providing, all in a single location, references to documents that are actually located in the bowels of the Finder in individual files. If there are files in one of the many program directories within ~/Library/Logs *in console* that relate to system hangs, I can't identify them since there is no sort by date *in console* but more problematically, they are sorted by program and lots of these programs I know nothing about. Nevertheless, selecting any such folder at random and Revealing in Finder, ascending to the Logs folder within either the base Library or the user Library, I have now done searches within these locales for ".hang" and have found only two old files: one each for Safari and FileChute. For finding files from the time of the crash, I don't know a way to isolate the folders and sub-folders through which I must sort by date, for example, inside Library/Logs: CrashReporter DiagnosticReports iStat Menus iStatMenusDaemon.log LittleSnitchDaemon.log LKDC-setup.log Qmaster TechToolProDaemon.log Xsan While on line with Apple yesterday that had me run a Capture Data pass which I then forwarded to them. This seems to have plenty of residue, or at least shifted time-stamps, which seem to throw my timings off by two hours. In the future, once crashed, and rebooted, the first thing for me to do, then, would be to enter these two directories *in the finder*: /Library/Logs and ~/Library/Logs. Once there, I should open a folder to begin looking for some residue at the time of crash. Which would these be?
