#95159 — Apple wants to force Sierra onto ElCapitan owner ?

Apple to automatically cram macOS Sierra into Macs – 'cos that worked
well for Windows 10
And they say Microsoft never innovates anything…

I take it that in reality, this will just be the background download of
that 5gig thing, but you still get an app that launches for install that
you can kill ? (and article mentiones it does this only if you have
automatic downloads enabled). Tempest in teapot ?

Still, I don't think 5 gig downloads should happen without user's consent.

from the above link,

...you have to have automatic updates enabled and the storage space
to take it, and you have to explicitly agree to the installation...

by enabling automatic update, the user has consented to getting updates.

But Sierra is an upgrade, not an update. Apple itself distinguishes
between the two: https://support.apple.com/HT201564

irrelevant.

the point is if you click the checkbox, you are giving consent.

So? Where does it say that the automatic software update facility will
never be used for major releases?

I'm just pointing out that:

-Apple makes a distinction between updates and upgrades,
-The automatic software update mechanism makes no mention of upgrades,
-It's not reasonable to assume that software upgrades won't be
automatically downloaded, given the above two.

They don't. Users have to ENABLE automatic download.

I am still running El Capitan, OSX 10.11.6 and there has just been a
vague hint that macOS 10.12 is available in the AppStore. So far nobody
a Apple has even attempted to force me to download and install anything.

I will update to Seirra in my own time, at my convenience. Apple lets
you do that.

Right. I'm also still running 10.11 at the moment. I've been using macOS
since the Mac SE, and other platforms before that. In all that time,
Apple's never forced me to install anything, and nothing's been
installed without my consent.

Automatic system updates is a relatively new (and completely optional)
feature introduced in macOS 10.10 Yosemite; and it's not really
surprising to me that it offers to upgrade to Sierra on systems where
the feature is enabled.

Well imagine that!

A high tech company pushes out a free upgrade to its newest operating
system so its customers will be running the latest, most powerful, and
most secure OS...yet pinheads find a reason to whine and complain.

You've proven yourself a lightweight in such matters - the clear message
is that for those with BW caps, it is not a welcome thing.

Then they should not enable automatic downloads.

What if I wanted automatic downloads of updates, but not of upgrades?
Given the wording of the pref panel, and Apple's published distinction
of the meanings of updates and upgrades, that is exactly what would be
expected to happen.

manually download the updates but not the upgrades. very simple.

given that very few people understand (or care about) the distinction
and that both are done using exactly the same mechanism, that being the
app store, it wouldn't be expected to happen.

Uh huh. I can automatically download the updates by manually downloading
them. Of all the dumb things you have ever said...

Yeah, I'm sure that includes lots and lots of people.

Someone who can afford Macs and is willing to shell out two or three
times what a Windows rig would have cost can't pony up a few bucks for
internet service that allows him to download enough so that he can use
his Apple toys...

macs are not 2-3x higher. they're similarly priced for similar specs.

You can't expect Windows nitwits to understand that. They can't do sums.
