So what? I've used it off and on for many years, and it hasn't *needed*
updating in all that time.

Since an SD card is a USB drive, this is captured by the file system and automounter. But Default Apps lets you define an app for the following Media: Camera Webcam Blank CD Blank DVD Blank BD Music CD Picture CD Video DVD Video BD Mini-DVD Device (this is from the "Media" tab. Other tabs are: Internet, Apps, URLs Extentions and UTIs. It works on Yosemite.

There may be USB/FW/etc. between the card reader and the computer, but that doesn't make the SD card a USB or Firewire (etc.) device.

Would it be fair then to state that the SD card, irrespective of which bus it is connetec via, is treated as a mountable file system by OS-X, and it is only when it finds certain "tell tale" photo dorectories that the auto mounter then invokes whatever application that is defined as handler for "Camera" ?

Since iPhoto can co-exist with Photos, it could be one avenue in case you migrate away from Photos. say you decide to adopt sopme new application which has a script to import from iPhoto but not from Photos. You could activate iPhoto to rebuild the iPhoto database from the Photos one and then run the conversion script to that new app you have chosen. The odd of that diminish over time as any new photo management app is likely to include direct conversion from Photos. Another reason to keep iPhoto: if you have a friend who uses iPhotop and you both share/work on his library (say large image restoration project). (but again, odds are it would be in bridge of lightroom, not iPhoto). You could rename the .app to i_photo.app or my_photo.app ands then set a reminded in 6 months to delete it if during that 6 months, you have not have any need to invoke it.

All semi-feasible rationales! I zipped it and deleted the original. It will undoubtedly linger for at least 3 years...

What about iPhoto? I never liked iPhoto, but I would occasionally load a bunch of pictures into it to use a feature I did like finding/matching faces, sorting by location. So I was irritated that Photos did not have some of those features. But it seems that Faces at least has been restored to Photos.
