So what? I've used it off and on for many years, and it hasn't *needed*
updating in all that time.

Since you gave no link or details, I'll assume you are referring to the
RCDefaultApp preference pane:

<http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/>

Please tell us which specific RCDefaultApp setting controls what happens
when an SD card is inserted.

Since an SD card is a USB drive, this is captured by the file system and
automounter.

But Default Apps lets you define an app for the following Media:
Camera
Webcam
Blank CD
Blank DVD
Blank BD
Music CD
Picture CD
Video DVD
Video BD
Mini-DVD Device

(this is from the "Media" tab. Other tabs are: Internet, Apps, URLs
Extentions and UTIs.

It works on Yosemite.

it isn't.

while many card readers connect via usb, not all of them do. the
built-in card readers are now directly on the pci bus and there are
also firewire and thunderbolt card readers.

The built-in SD card reader was on the PCI bus in 2012 models (e.g. Mid
2012 MacBook Pro and Late 2012 Mac Mini), but is connected to the USB
Superspeed bus on more recent models (e.g. Late 2013 MacBook Pro and
2015 MacBook Air).

There may be USB/FW/etc. between the card reader and the computer, but
that doesn't make the SD card a USB or Firewire (etc.) device.

Agreed. I was just pointing out a minor detail in nospam's post which
didn't match reality.

Would it be fair then to state that the SD card, irrespective of which
bus it is connetec via, is treated as a mountable file system by OS-X,
and it is only when it finds certain "tell tale" photo dorectories that
the auto mounter then invokes whatever application that is defined as
handler for "Camera" ?

Yup! All it takes is a DCIM folder.

Yes, and Camera is where you set options for SD cards, I'm told.

Isn't this just the OS-X file system, which upon seeing telltake
directories on newly mounted disk, will treat it as camera medium and
launch the application defined as handler for cameras ?

I don't think so. Who would waste nine pins
on an interface that only defines four?

An SD card is NOT a USB drive.

I tend to keep zipped copies of such programs for, well, no good reason but
then toss them so I do not accidently open them.

Since iPhoto can co-exist with Photos, it could be one avenue in case
you migrate away from Photos.

say you decide to adopt sopme new application which has a script to
import from iPhoto but not from Photos.

You could activate iPhoto to rebuild the iPhoto database from the Photos
one and then run the conversion script to that new app you have chosen.

The odd of that diminish over time as any new photo management app is
likely to include direct conversion from Photos.

Another reason to keep iPhoto: if you have a friend who uses iPhotop and
you both share/work on his library (say large image restoration
project). (but again, odds are it would be in bridge of lightroom, not
iPhoto).

You could rename the .app to i_photo.app or my_photo.app ands then set a
reminded in 6 months to delete it if during that 6 months, you have not
have any need to invoke it.

All semi-feasible rationales! I zipped it and deleted the original.
It will undoubtedly linger for at least 3 years...

No. It is EOLed by Apple and will not receive any further updates.

I never liked iPhoto, but I would occasionally load a bunch of pictures
into it to use a feature I did like finding/matching faces, sorting by
location. So I was irritated that Photos did not have some of those
features. But it seems that Faces at least has been restored to Photos.

faces wasn't restored to photos because it was never removed.
