SubjectGrrrr! Sierra Screwed Apple ID
Message-ID<200920162142224363%star@sky.net>
After entering my Apple ID and password CORRECTLY several times
FaceTime said I had entered it incorrectly too many times and I had to
reset it. So I did. Successfully, according to the web page. Then I
went through the process again--entering it CORRECTLY--and the process
repeated. Grrrr!

Caps Lock key set, with burned-out indicator light? My wife's ancient
keyboard misbehaves this way. I've suggested that before supplying a
password to anything, she check with a text editor to see if Caos Lock
happens to be in effect.

Thanks for taking time to reply. Nope, not the problem. In fact, I'm
convinced nothing on my Mac was the problem, and that Apple was not
parsing my PW correctly. I waited it out and this morning my (third)
new password was accepted. My caps-lock indicator lamp works. Mid 2012
MBP Retina SSD. All that remains is to log in at the various places in
the other five Macs, five iPads, two iPhones, and a few iPods.

I have that problem with a very old Macally iKey keyboard. It doesn't
have lights, so I use

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/56648/capsy

Works like a charm. There's also

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33343/capsee

I just set the caps lock on every mac i ever use to act as a control key
as $DEITY intended.

One of the main reasons I have no bought an iPad Pro is that the
keyboard has absolutely no indication of when the idiotic caps-lock key
is engaged.

But the screen does. password fields will say so, and when typing isn't
hidden, it's obvious.

Since some don't, is probably why they did what I said. AND a few
versions back, the IOS keyboad was changed so that it DOES show
caps-lock by making ALL the keys' glyphs show what character they will
produce.

where 'a few versions back' is just one version, ios 9, from last year.

prior to ios 9, upper or lower case was indicated by the shift key icon
on the keyboard.

No, the screen does not indicate caps lock in any way with an attached
keyboard.

We're not talking about the on-screen keyboard.

Being one of those people who almost never has a need for caps-lock
key, but sometimes hits it by mistake, I transformed it on every Mac I
use into a do-nothing key. I hope I can remember how to do it when I
replace my MacBook Air in the next few months.

Shouldn't matter. An icon appears in a password entry field to show that
caps lock is enabled.

Not for me, it doesn't. What

(a) Operating system
(b) Web browser
(c) URL

behave this way for you?

Every version of Mac OS in my memory works as Mr. Massello described.
Has aught to do with Web browsers or URLs.

But I think it's only the case for system authentication dialogues. When
you're entering a password in a web site login form there's no such icon.

I tested it on different web sites in Safari, iCab, and Google Chrome.
All show the caps lock icon. It's been this way for years. David Ryeburn
is using MT-NewsWatcher, so he's probably still on 10.6, which might
predate this feature.

Wow, you're right. I never noticed it before.

Nope, I'm running 10.6 in a VM so I can use MT-NW. I just tested it here
and I got the icon.

One of several reasons I will soon be running 10.6.8 under 10.11 in a
VM. Another one is Eudora.

Which emulator program are you using? I'd like to try Virtual Box since
it's free, but many people seem to think Parallels is worth the money.

Virtualizers ≠ emulators

I use Parallels (which, BTW, is virtualization software, not an emulator
-- an emulator would be something like SheepShaver). I'm quite happy
with it. I currently have VMs with OS 10.5 through 10.12, along with
several different Windows versions and a variety of linuces. For some
reason Yosemite and Sierra run incredibly slowly when virtualized in
parallels, but everything else runs well.

Note that Parallels won't let you run 10.6.x in a VM, but it will let
you run 10.6.x server. I suspect the same holds for Fusion, but I'm not
sure about Virtual Box.

My limited experience with virtual box is that it is very unstable, but
YMMV.

Andre
