#87266 — Local items Keychain question

The keychain seems to be the preferred one for Mail to store the mail passwords, but it remains unlocked. Is that OK?

If I move the passwords to a keychain I created Mail creates the passwords anew in Local items. Weird. I want keychains to lock after a certain time and only opened when I want and need it.

TIA,
Steve.

Sure. It is locked when you log out, and is not accessible to other users
of the system.

Why? Sounds like you are micromanaging your computer.

But s/he can set the keychain to lock. And in fact, the keychain locks
all the time, For example, if the screen saver kicks in and you need a
password to unlock the screensaver, the keychain locks. You can also
open preferences in Keychain Access and put the keychain status on the
menu bar. This allows you to lock the screen andor keychains from the
menu bar.

Same with logging out, yes. And at no time is the keychain available for
other users to access - even unlocked.

There's no real need to lock keychains manually; you can lock the screen
that way though, which can be useful if you want to lock the screen
immediately.

Yep.

No, there is no need at all. However, for those who favor paranoia over
sense, it is possible.

I just use Shift-Control-Eject (or Power) to turn off the screen
immediately, which also locks it. No scrubbing for a menu item, and I
can do it quite literally as I walk away from the machine.

I believe Local Items is supposed to lock after a period of idleness,
but I've never seen it happen.

In Keychain Preferences, General, you can click Show Status in Menu Bar.
That makes it handy to lock and unlock keychains.

Yeah, but no the Local items keychain.

Local Items is a special offshoot of the Login keychain and it locks and
unlocks automatically with it.

Thanks everybody. One post to JR got lost. Anyhow. Ah, the times of MT Newswatcher. Back to the subject...

Yeah, locking the login keychain locks the Local Items keychain too. Then again, you can't lock the Login keychain, because the OS puts all kind of stuff in there it needs regularly. ids: identity services ?? If you lock the Login keychain the OS keeps asking you for the password, so you leave it unlocked.

Steve.

But it's locked when you want it to be. When you are actively using the
computer, it's not locked, but why would you want it to be locked then?
