I've had that checked for years; it's useless. It can't find hidden
files and folders (with a leading "." in the name), or the non-dotted
files in them. EasyFind does, and searches their contents if asked.

No, it doesn't include hidden files because "System" ≠ "Hidden".

It's useful to me the majority of the time. For the rest more primitive
Finder searches will out what I need. (Shouldn't say primitive, they're
quite powerful).

"HD being commandeered all the time"?

Well. No. It indexes and then does updates to the indexes. Hardly
uses CPU or disk access time after that.

You might want to consider that a) the computer is there to work for you
and that b) an idle computer isn't all that productive for anyone.

Some people apparently prefer to spend their time babysitting their
computer rather than letting the computer do the job of getting shit
done and moving on to the next thing. Personally, my time is much more
valuable than that. I get lots of shit done with my machines, and it
pays *very* well. : )

As I recall, there are low-level OS hooks where disk write operations
will update the Spotlight indexes as they occur. I think that's pretty
slick.

Yep, it's done with the File System Events API:

Same here.

One of the FIRST THINGS I do with any OS install is disable Spotlight,
then delete all the indexes.

Then I put on "EasyFind" and "FindAnyFile", and I'm done.

Guess I'm not the only one to loathe Spotlight.

That's just fine--for you. But Spotlight serves my needs, so I'll
continue to use it and hope that no one take that personally.

You loathe something you never use and have no interaction with? Right,
that's what is known as 'irrational'.

The last time I did a content search using EasyFind (after Spotlight
failed to find the file containing the search argument), it took about
two hours to search something over a million files, but it did find what
I needed. I use Spotlight when it works because I'm just not willing to
wait that long when I don't have to.

EasyFind isn't as slow as the Spotlight/"Apple can do no wrong"
defenders in here are making it out to be. You can drag a folder to the
desktop and have EasyFind only search that folder, which is all I need
to do the majority of the time. Also you can search only for Files, or
Folders, or Files & Folders, or File Contents with EasySearch.

Just because someone appreciates what Spotlight gives then doesn't make
them an irrational defender of all things Apple.

You can do that with Spotlight without having to launch an app, and the
results will be displayed faster as well.

Same as Spotlight, only slower.

EasyFind's alias is in my Apple menu courtesy of FruitMenu. Doesn't take
me any extra time at all to launch it.

I might lose a few seconds in an actual search compared to Spotlight,
but with a MUCH better interface when the results come up with EasyFind.

Doesn't change the fact that you have to launch it, while I simply
type a search query into any Finder window.

You lose *far* more than a few seconds versus almost instant Spotlight
search results.

It might be a few seconds difference when you are looking at one folder
with a few dozen files on it. It will be several *hours* when you need
to search the whole drive.

I can also do that with Spotlight, and it's much faster.

I can also do that with Spotlight, and it's much faster.

Go nuts with it then. I know when I've done things like clone systems
Spotlight NEVER could settle itself down from constant indexing. It
completely useless when that's going on.

PEBKAC - no such "issues" here.
