No need for any of that nonsense if you use full disk encryption.

These still have spinning hard drives in standard configurations, with
SSDs as options (also Fusion drives as options for the desktop models):

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) - the last with optical drive etc.
iMac
Mac Mini

The rest are SSD only for internal drives:

MacBook (12-inch, Retina Display)
MacBook Air
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Retina Display)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Retina Display)
Mac Pro

Secure Empty Trash has been removed but you can still erase in Disk
Utility and srm is still there if needed.

Move the files to a folder from the trash and srm them there.

Or whip up an AppleScript in 5 minutes to do the srm of anything in the

Not sure you can act on things in the trash from Apple Script (then
again I haven't tried). For some reason I find Apple Script awkward in
style.

As I said, I wasn't sure. For example I can't open or run a file that's
in the trash, so not sure what ops I can do on them when in the trash
(other than move or delete).

IAC, I have a batch file to do a periodic sweep and srm on any file or
folder in the folder "AAA" on any volume on my system. So anything I
want to really nuke I move into there and from time to time run the batch.

You can run shell commands with AppleScript's "do shell script" command
as well.

Unix commands such as "rm" work fine in the directory called .Trash

If you work with .Trashes at the top of the device, you may have to use
"sudo" and/or confirm overriding security on subfolders that belong to
others. (and some may be "no delete".

But the actual files should be deletable without problem.

It is the gui Finder which refuses certain operations when a file is in
a directory called .Trash or .Trashes.

And you have been able to for a long time. Even in Classic Mac. I had a
bizarre little AppleScript where my Trash would "chase" my hard drive around
the screen. The hard drive "wanted" to get to the center of the screen to
some other icon (I do not even recall what now) but avoid the Trash.

If the Trash "caught" the hard drive it then the hard drive would be thrown
out. And then emptied.

Of course, I did not really throw out the hard drive! It was moved off
screen and another file was copied to the Trash. Then the Trash would move
back its standard spot and "burp" the hard drive out which would start the
whole thing over again.

OK, I never said it was a useful AppleScipt, but in making it I did move
things in and out of the Trash and otherwise work with it. No issue at all.

If you ever find that script, I'd love a copy. : )

I do not think I still have it. Was modified from an older Apple IIe BASIC
program I had with a "bee" (a black dot and a yellow dot) being chases by a
"bird" (three dots in a "V" formation) with the "bee" trying to get to a
"flower" in the center of the screen (four red dots in a square). I ended up
using this in a Philosophy class to look at how people thought of free will
(techies described the action in "algorithms", non-techies described it as
"desires").

I *do* still have copies of an old AIM bot I made:
<http://prescottcomputerguy.com/turing/>

It was basically just a big look up table with some clever(ish) rating
systems and ways of parsing names... but would often be confused for a human
for hours (and then would crash because of memory overflows or whatever).

Full code is there and open source.

Neat. Back when IRC was much more popular, I ran Infobot, and it
provided many who visited my channel hours of entertainment. : )

If I find it I will happily share. Did not work in OS X though... and I
never looked into why (well, I went far enough to change what folders it
moved, given how their is no desktop Trash on OS X... but still did not
work).

My then-girlfriend (now my wife) and I used to watch it run. The logs do not
do it justice. In the chat rooms you did not know for certain who it was
responding to and enough of the comments are "Barnum" statements that people
would sometimes think it responded to something it did not. Also the order
of the logs is how the bot "saw" things, not always the same order as the
chats.

The funny thing is it started off as a bot blocker. I was sick of all the
porn bots and the like in rooms so I made it to automatically block the.
Then I started adding responses... and decided to just add to the problem I
was working to fix, but at least do it in a fun way. :)

Many of the people in the computing chats and some of the others I
frequently had it in knew it was a bot (or could guess by the name: Turing
Device is a wee bit of a hint!) They enjoyed playing with it.

srm (or rm -P) must only be done on non SSD based files. Doing so on SSD
will actually duplicate your data into many places on SSD.

It gets worse with "Fusion" since you can't really know if a file in
your .Trash folder resides on SSD (no secure erase should be done) or on
spinning rust platters.

Yeah, covered about 20 times a priori. Do try to keep up.

I didn't say to do it on SSD trashes.

Perhaps you haven't yet learned that on OS X, the trash can on the Dock
actually shows the contents of multiple .Trash directories.
