Yep.

More times than not, the flash drive refuses to boot... or boots
half-way, and hangs.

Something with my machine, maybe... but it's worked once, or twice.
It's worked every time when I use the installer - so I stopped even trying it.

I throw on Diskwarrior 5, Onyx, SuperDuper, Malwarebytes, ClamXav, and
Memtest, to name a few.

Have you actually done this recently? That method worked for 10.7 and
10.8, but not for more recent versions.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I've done it a bunch of times. I've got a
Yosemite installer USB stick sitting right here. I just forgot. It's still
as simple as running a command-line utility:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
/Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Yosemite.app --nointeraction

Anyhow, the OP is asking about 10.6 in particular.

Thanks. So there is a utility inside the .app to populate the target
bootable disk. The referenced file (createinstallmedia is present in
the Yosemite installation app

I guess I am all set to create minimal yosemite boot that allows me to
copy to the new drives I have ordered (once received :-).

I hope I remember how to reboot. I do that so seldom :-)

You are overcomplicating things. Install OS X on the USB stick,
then install whatever additional stuff you want on it. Done deal.

Easy. You install OS X on it, and then boot on it and install whatever
third-party applications you want.

Not (AFAIK) for Snow Leopard or anything later. BootCD stopped working
after 10.3.

<http://www.charlessoft.com>

In the current environment of cheap USB sticks, there's little developer
interest in doing the work necessary to get things to run from read-only
media. The closest thing these days is Alsoft's DiskWarrior, which adds
DW to an Apple Recovery Disk that can run from a 4GB USB stick.

If you want a customizable utility drive, I suggest you bite the bullet
and install 10.6 on a USB stick, then add your chosen utilities to it. I
don't know how much space the 10.6 installer wants, but I know that the
10.9 and later installers need more than an 8GB stick. After
installation, you can delete the porkier default items, such as
/Library/Fonts and /Library/Dictionaries, that aren't needed on a
minimal utility drive.

Nah. I've got a Ypsemite (10.10) installer on a 8GB stick right here.

For a bootable installer, yes; but the installer won't even try to put a
full working system on an 8GB stick. A stripped-down system will fit in
8GB, but a fresh system installation won't.

I have succesfully created the USB stick with the "OS X Base System.dmg"
(from the OS X InstalESD.dmg insude the Shared folder that is inside the
Install Yosemite.app.

I succesfully booted from it. Gives the minila boot environment I was
looking for.

I succesfully used Disk Util in that environment to copy my Snow Leopard
system disk and use files to a backup drive. (took 4 hours while my mac
was unusable :-(

Now, I can tempt fate and upgrade to Yosemite as I hacve a backup drive
with Snow Leopard I can boot from for the stuff I will miss.

I am still waiting for suggestions for a good News client to replace MT
NewsWatcher for binaries (I use Thunderbird for text newsgroups).

In the process of installing Yosemite. The interface shows:

  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

So far, the istallation seems semf-contained from within the .app file.
I recall when I upgraded my laptop the download from the App Store
didn't take long but the installation took forever so I had figured that
it was drawing much data from Apple servers as it proceeded. But so far,
this appears to be wrong.

Is it possible that when you initially download the .app from the App
Store that it is not populated with Yosemite and when you run it, it
draws data from Apple servers to populate itself with the big files and
once done, those big files stay in ?

BTW, what is the best trick to label a USB stick ? (that was advantage
of DVD drives).

Do what I do -- install snow leopard in a virtual machine and continue
to use newswatcher.

Parallels Desktop 10.3; Mac OS 10.10.5 (Host OS) and Mac OS 10.6.8

Ah. Server, ok. I have 10.6 *client* running in VirtualBox, but it's
quite buggy. For instance if I allow software updates, it refuses to
boot properly afterwards. I may bite the bullet some time and pay for
Server.

Considering that the server version is only around $20.00, I'd say that
it's worth biting the bullet rather than dealing with the various hacks
needed to get the client to run (I've not used VirtualBox so I don't
what's involved there).

Yeah. I'll buy it next time I really need a 10.6 install for something.

VirtualBox didn't require any trickery, but it's rather buggy.

It's also, per benchmarks, the slowest of the VM managers.

I'd rather pay for something that's well maintained even if it costs me
about $60 every 3 - 4 years.

Parallels has been ranked fastest in most respects for the last 5 years
or so.

But I've been using VMWare Fusion for longer than that so I stick to it.
