I'm not even sure where to ask about this, but here it is: Every so often lately, my MacBook Pro Intel laptop running OS 10.6.8 suddenly gets a pattern of odd little squares all over the screen on top of whatever I've been doing and I can't get rid of it nor get a reaction from any application. Until today, turning it off was possible. Today it wouldn't even let me turn it off. I tried the assorted function keys to see whether one of them would get rid of it, though I hadn't hit them before. Either that or trying again to turn off the laptop doubled this odd pattern, and I couldn't turn off the computer at all. I disconnected it and took out the battery. after reinserting it, the laptop was normal again. I can't post a foto of it because screen grab is also disabled. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist

Screen shots aren't photos, and as a result often won't show graphics hardware malfunctions. It's easy enough to take a photo of the screen with a camera and post it. It sounds like your graphics driver or hardware may be malfunctioning. What model and year MacBook Pro is this? Have you checked to see if it is covered by Apple?: <https://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/> -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. That sounds as if it might be one of several possibilities. Whatever the problem you are going to need a visit to an Apple store or a certified repair center. Since you are still running OSX 10.6.8, it looks as if time and wear and tear have caught up with you: 1: The ribbon connector to the display, which runs through the hinge might be damaged and needs to be replaced. I had this happen to a G4 PowerBook Pro 17", and the entire display had to be replaced because of the way the connection was made with that particular PB. 2: The ribbon connector is fine, but there is an LCD failure. This is unlikely. 3: Possible logic board failure. -- Regards, Savageduck

In my case, I have remove access enabled so in such a case I could telnet/ssh into the machine and see if it responds. Sometimes it won't connect, sometimes it connects but doesn't give me a login prompt (aka: can't create new process) and sometimes it works. If you can get shell access, you use the shutdown command to turn the machine off. It it were a screen problem, the power button should still function, and you would still be able to remotely login as the OS instance wouldn't even know the screen driver has gone nuts and isn't displaying what the OS wants it to display. Have you tried to shut it down blind ? (move "mouse" to upper left corner and then click (should open the Apple menu) and move down and release, hoping you are releasing on "shutdown" or "restart" and then be patient (system has dialogue allowing you to cancel within 30 seconds) If you have another computer, goto iFixit.com and get instructions on how to change batteries for your model. Open back and disconnect the battery. This should shutdown your machine. Wait some time and reconnect it, and see how it behaves.

Taking out and replacing the battery made the pattern overlay go away. I'll try some of the other suggestions next time. Oh, and it's an even pattern of tiny squares spread across the screen. "Odd" as in "weird" 8-) I can see anything that was open on the screen, but can control nothing. Next time I'll take a foto of it with my iPad. -- biblioholic medievalist

I brought my 2011 MBP in to the Apple Store a couple of months ago, when it started crashing and showing weird graphical problems. They said there was a known problem with the graphic cards on these, and they're doing free replacements. So I suggest you head over to the Genius Bar. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

I guess that might depend on the size and type of image file, and local broadband performance. I use Dropbox (free 2.5GB), Adobe CC (20GB inc. in $9.99 subscription), and Box (free 15GB), depending on my nintentions. Screenshots are shared via DB along with some demo images. Project images which might include original RAW files, PSDs with adjustment layers intact, result JPEGs, and Lightroom generated online Collections. I had used Pogoplug for a while, but their service has soured somewhat. Fastest of the three. Four or five seconds to display the image.

*Extremely* slow. I stopped counting after 10 seconds. Probably closer
to 15-20 seconds. Sheesh!

A bit faster than Adobe CC, but still slower than DB.

Are you sure this is easiest or most economical? What about the old
fashioned idea of having your own hosting and uploading via FTP? Why
be so Mac when you can use a Mac and be a Mr Universal. Btw, your
pictures look suspiciously like some of the scenery I saw in beautiful
California.

They work for me. I have been using DB for years, and I subscribe to
Adobe CC Photographer's Program for $9.99/month. That gives me
Photoshop CC, and Lightroom CC, along with the bonus of the 20GB of CC
storage.

At this stage I couldn't be bothered.

They should. You have a panorama of Yosemite Valley (El Cap on the
left), a Cisitalia shot at the Avila Beach Concours, Avila Beach, CA,
and a few of the competitors at this year's Lake San Antonio WildFlower
Triathlon, just up the road from my little Californian home.
Here is what a finished rendition of that Yosemite Valley Pano looks like:

...and Yosemite Falls:

Then there is another one of my favorite California locations; The top of
"The Corkscrew" at Laguna Seca, near Monterey, CA.
