I am using OS X 11.9.4, mail application, for my email. I thought my settings were all right, but every time I erase the mail that's in my Junk/GMail IMAP mailbox, it comes back. I like the Junk filter; it has never left anything I was interested in reading. How should I be configuring the mail application so when I erase junk, it's gone?

I'm guessing you need to revisit your GMail settings as shown here: <http://www.macworld.com/article/2048781/how-to-delete-gmail-messages-so-theyre-truly-gone.html> -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
