I am using OS X 11.9.4, mail application, for my email.  I thought my 
settings were all right, but every time I erase the mail that's in my 
Junk/GMail IMAP mailbox, it comes back.   I like the
Junk filter; it has never left anything I was interested in reading.  
How should I be configuring the mail application so when I erase junk, 
it's gone?

You mean OS X 10.9.4.

I'm getting the same behavior beginning a week or so ago. Nothing has 
been changed, that I know of. I see no changes in any seettings.

I'm guessing you need to revisit your GMail settings as shown here:
