Right. I quit high school in my senior year and joined the Air Force.
After my discharge, I applied to Purdue and was admitted on scholastic
probation and required to take some remedial math courses. After my
engineering freshman year I was accepted into the School of Engineering
Sciences where I completed my undergraduate degree with Highest
Distinction.

The that has changed. When my kids went in the early 90s, the SAT was
required at Indiana University. Grades and bunch of other things were
included, but the SAT was an important part.

So one who does not understand taxation, budgeting and government debt
should be allowed to cast a vote for a government that spends like crazy
and does not tax enough to pay for it all?

(eg: California "propositions" that force the government to spend more
without forcing the taxpayers to pay for it).

Point taken on university admissions - to a degree.

(IMO universities admit too many students. It's profitable).

Yup! They have as much right to vote for their representation as anyone
else, including those who think they understand taxation, budgeting and
government debt.

They should be allowed to cast a vote for a government--you can never
be sure what the government will or will not do.

And politicians do their best to disseminate consistently erroneous
problems and solutions. And still we have the right to vote. I think
that beats measuring up to *that same governement* plan to "validate" a
users qualifications before allowing them to vote.

Or should we vote on that too?

It isn't a question of testing citizens before they are allowed to vote.
It is a question of ensuring the education system teaches teenagers
about how government REALLY works so that they can make educated
decisions by the time they turn 18.

When I got involved fighting throttling and UBB at the canadian CRTC,
this also brought me to testify in front of the govt industry committee
and discuss with various opposition politicans and their aides and I
learned more during this period than I ever learned in the many years
including education years.

This has made me realise how little people know about how government
really works.

Except that "how government REALLY works" changes every year, and many
times during the year it is manipulated by elected officials for their
own ends. Note the hard work rewriting voting laws and the passage of
ALEC bills like the "stand your ground" gun marketing laws.

The "education system", whatever that may be, is incapable of
countering the "mis-education system" of agitprop disseminated by faux
news on TV and radio 24 hours a day.

Considering that "common sense" class that would teach teenagers about
how government REALLY works, I would point out the "common sense" jihad
the Texas schoolboard went through to rewrite American history books to
more closely conform to this year's Republican ideology. In the new
rewrite, Thomas Jefferson, not quite Christian enough for
Neo-Christianist history, has been relegated to secondary status among
the "founding fathers".

So the simplistic idea of education teens about the very real mechanics
of power in 2013 seems a vastly more difficult job. Sloganeering as
education versus sloganeering as entertainment--it's tough to separate.

When I knew less, I respected Jefferson. I wasn't greatly bothered by
him not being Christian.

I still respect his many accomplishemnts, but pretending to be a
Christian to some people and being plainly NOT for other people,
along with a few other hypocrisies, makes him seem like just one more
scheming politician.

Why does everyone call it a “fanny pack" ?
When was the last time you saw one on a fanny?

He was a Christian, he just wasn't a Southern Baptist Republican Christianist.

If you read his writings selectively, you can make him a Christian or an
atheist. I think he was a chameleon.

If you put garbage in a computer nothing comes out but garbage.
But this garbage, having passed through a very expensive machine,
is somehow ennobled and none dare criticize it.

If you vascillate between Christianity and not, you're a "chamelon".

Why would an athetist go to the trouble to edit a bible down to just
the word's Christ purportedly said, I wonder.

In the old testament, you have the words of god and then a whole bunch
of fluff around that. Much of that fluff is really about hygiene (kosher
cooking rules to increase average lifetime without refrigiration in an
area without much water). Another edict is that one has to kill someone
whose had sex with an animal. This makes sense in that it greatly
reduces the chance of a deadly virus being transmitted from animals to
humans. However, those lifestyle edicts in the bible have nothing to do
with religion, they have to do with educating people of the middle east
on how to increase chances of survival and success of the species in
those days. Those are akin to day's government public service ads about
sneezing into your arms instead of hands, or wearing condoms when you
have sex.

Similarly, in new testament, you have what jesus said, and then you have
the fluff that came out of his entourage (some camm them the apostles).

jesus didn't really change the core of the jewish religion. He just
re-affirmed it. The apostles changed much fo the fluff around it (such
as eating restrictions) when they wanted to expand beyond the middle
east and try to convert romans, greeks etc who lived in a different
weather, had more available water etc etc.

So in a way, it does make sense to remove all the lifestyle fluff form
the bibles to retain only what god/jesus said. The lifestyle stuff has
to adapt to different regions of the world and evolve with technology.
With refrigiration, eating pork is no longer considered dangerous.

More accurately, you have what his entourage reports that he said, and
their "fluff". We have no reportage of his sayings other than second
hand.

I'm not aware of them actually *changing* old-testament fluff in the
new testament. Do they lift restrictions on shell-fish and pork
somewhere?

I think it makes sense to glean from the famous ancient tomes anything
of value to you, and then use selectively it to beat heathens/pagans
over the head with. I think it makes the same "sense" as any other
political tool.
